Sacramentans celebrate at 18th annual Juneteeth festival

Hundreds of Sacramentans gathered at William Land Park on Saturday to celebrate Juneteenth. The event happened just days after President Joe Biden officially declared Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday. "This is one day to celebrate, to celebrate culture and community, but it's also remembrance of the work we have to continue doing after today," said Sacramento city Councilmember Katie Valenzuela. "A lot of people don't know the meaning of Juneteenth," said festival organizer and Executive Director Gary Simon. "We celebrate the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, but it took 2 and a half years for those enslaved in Texas to find out they had been free. We want people to understand and know that's why we are here." See more in the video above.
