True story of Nicolas Cage comic-book theft to become a movie
Eccentric actor Nicolas Cage is no stranger to theft and thievery on the big screen. Over the course of his movie career, the Oscar-winning actor has stolen everything from babies and faces to classic muscle cars to even the Declaration of Independence.
Cage is also painfully familiar with real-life acts of burglary, having been the victim of a much publicized comic-book heist in 2000. This story would be strange enough if it were about any other actor, but this is Nicolas Cage we're talking about here. Lionsgate apparently understands just how incredible the story is, and has just closed a deal for a movie about the theft of the movie star's valuable comic book.
Cage, a huge comic-book fan, once owned a mint copy of "Action Comics" No. 1, a 1938 issue that featured the first-ever appearance of the iconic hero Superman. Oh, and did we mention it's currently valued at over $2 million? The comic book eventually (and quite mysteriously) turned up in an abandoned storage locker in 2011, and a fictionalized account of the story is about to become a movie -- possibly starring Cage himself.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, "Reno 911!" creators Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant have just inked a deal with Lionsgate to produce "Action No. 1," a comedic heist film loosely based on the theft of Cage's prized comic book. Though it was reportedly unlikely to happen, the film includes a role that the screenwriters wrote specifically for Cage. Who better to play the actor than the man himself? Nicolas Cage doing his best Nicolas Cage would be a sight to behold. We smell an Oscar.
