This is happening: Internet meme Grumpy Cat gets a movie deal

Hilarious and adorable felines are a staple of any good Internet diet. If you go a day online without seeing cute cat or kitten of some kind, you might be doing it wrong. Given the undeniable popularity of cat memes and viral video kitties like Maru and Lil Bub, is it any wonder that Hollywood is finally trying to get in on the act?

In what is sure to be both squee-inducing news to some and a soul-crushing disappointment to others, Deadline is reporting that permanently perturbed internet sensation Grumpy Cat recently secured a movie deal.

The Phoenix, Arizona-based cat (real name: Tardar Sauce) was born with feline dwarfism and an underbite that makes her appear grouchy. Grumpy Cat hit it big last fall when her owners, the Bundesen family, put a video of their ever-frowning feline online. Some 20 million video views and a media blitz later (a tour that included appearances on "Good Morning America" and at the South by Southwest Festival) and Grumpy Cat was a bona-fide Internet superstar. The family converted on Tardar’s 15 minutes of fame first by signing with an agent, getting a book contract (“Grumpy Cat: A Grumpy Book” is set for release in October) and now this major movie deal.

The film will reportedly be a family-friendly comedy in the mold of “Garfield,” while a voice actor will be added to imbue Grumpy Cat with the long-overdue power of speech. The untitled movie is being produced by Todd Garner and Sean Robins of Broken Road, the team behind the upcoming Will Ferrell/Jack Black comedy “Tag Brothers” – another true-to-life film about a nationwide, month-long game of tag being played by a group of friends in their forties.

Will all this newfound Hollywood fame go to Grumpy Cat's head? Not likely. The film won’t be Tardar’s first big screen outing. Grumpy Cat co-starred in the film “Lil Bub & Friendz,” a documentary about the lives of Internet cats. The doc premiered at the Tribeca Film Festvial in April, where it won the Tribeca Online Festival Best Feature Film award.

If a curmudgeonly cat from Arizona can make it in Tinsel Town, anyone can!
