‘Lil Bub & Friendz’ trailer: Would you watch a documentary about famous Internet cats?

First the Internet, now Hollywood? As spring film fest season ramps up, it looks like everyone’s favourite web cats are poised to make a big splash.

The 2013 Tribeca Film Festival kicks off in New York City in April, and, as usual, the Lower Manhattan film fest is full of earnest indies, quirky comedies, serious dramas, and grim documentaries. But there’s one film in this year’s Tribeca lineup that doesn’t really fall into any of the previously mentioned categories: “Lil Bub & Friendz.”

Produced by VICE Films (of Montreal-based arts & culture mag repute), “Lil Bub & Friendz” is the story of some of the Internet’s most famous felines. The film is primarily focused on the titular Bub, an adorable cat born with severe genetic issues that have resulted in a “perma-kitten” appearance and constantly protruding tongue. “Lil Bub” documents Bub and her owner, Indiana resident Mike Bridavsky, dealing with their newfound Internet fame. Bub’s Facebook page currently has over 100,000 fans and her YouTube channel nearly four million video views.

The film also features the trials and tribulations of other superstar cats, including Grumpy Cat and the late, great Keyboard Cat. If their huge popularity on the Internet is any indication, “Lil Bub & Friendz” are sure to be a big draw at Tribeca. No word on whether festival founder Robert De Niro had any hand in programming the movie. Would you see a feature length documentary about these feline web sensations?

“Lil Bub and Friendz” is just one of the many notable film fest appearances for cats this year. A “Reefer Madness”-inspired parody about the dangers of catnip, entitled “Catnip: Egress to Oblivion?” won the Short Film Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival in January (the award-winning short can be seen online in its entirety here). And earlier this month, the ever popular Grumpy Cat thrilled her fans with a live appearance at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

“Lil Bub & Friendz” premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 18 and will be available online sometime after that.
