‘The Bourne Legacy’ trailer sees Jeremy Renner take over for Matt Damon
How do you continue a franchise as successful as the "Bourne" series without its main star and director? With the exit of Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass from the "Bourne" franchise, that was exactly the question facing Universal.
It's true that the franchise probably should have ended with 2007's "The Bourne Ultimatum," but the studio seems to have found a pretty great way to continue the series, bringing on multiple Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner ("The Hurt Locker") to take over for Damon in "The Bourne Legacy." Now that the new trailer has dropped, we can finally see what we're in for.
Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Tony Gilroy ("Michael Clayton"), "The Bourne Legacy" stars Renner as Aaron Cross, a deadly successor to Damon's Jason Bourne. Gilroy himself is already a veteran of the franchise, having written the screenplays for the first three "Bourne" films.
Gilroy has assembled an absolutely stellar cast for the fourth movie. Co-starring Edward Norton ("Fight Club") and Rachel Weisz ("The Whistleblower"), the film also features a number of returning "Bourne" players, including Joan Allen, Scott Glenn, David Straithairn, and Albert Finney. The heavy-hitting ensemble is definitely not your typical action movie cast.
"The Bourne Legacy" recently wrapped filming in Alberta, Canada (hence all the snow in the trailer) and is currently shooting in the Philippines. The film will hit theatres on August 3, 2012.
