‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ trailer hits the web

An impressive new trailer for "The Amazing Spider-Man" debuted late last night, introducing viewers to a grittier and darker version of the webslinger.

Starring Andrew Garfield ("The Social Network") as a teenaged version of Peter Parker, "The Amazing Spider-Man" looks to tell the "untold story" of the iconic superhero. An audacious claim for a film based on a character who turns 50 this year, but if the trailer for the reboot is any indication, the film will be a drastic departure from the web-head's previous big-screen incarnations.

If there is one thing that the trailer makes abundantly clear, it's that this is not the Sam Raimi/Tobey MacGuire version of Spider-Man that audiences are familar with. Those days are over, the trailer seems to scream. Gone is the light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek tone of the Raimi films, replaced with the edgier take that all post-"Batman Begins" superhero movies seemingly must adhere to. The more brooding and intense, the better.

Even familiar characters like Mary Jane Watson and Norman Osborn are absent for this outing. Parker's first comic book girlfriend, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), takes centre stage this go-around, while the wall-crawler's famous reptilian foe The Lizard, aka Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), takes on villain duties.

Director Marc Webb ("500 Days of Summer") has some seriously big shoes to fill. Raimi's "Spider-Man" films grossed almost $2.5 billion dollars worldwide, and 2004's "Spider-Man 2" became one of the best reviewed and financially successful superhero movies of all time. The bloated third film in the series received only mixed reviews, but still managed to earn nearly $1 billion dollars single-handedly.

Despite the new cast and decidedly serious tonal shift, Webb's reboot is pretty much guaranteed to be a better film than the convoluted mess that was "Spider-Man 3." Though, to be fair, almost anything would be an improvement at this point.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" swings into theatres on July 3, 2012 in 3D.

In my reboot, it would be just like the cartoon. Right down to the crazy music and acid sky.

Gwen Stacy isn't Peter's first GF in the comics, he was going out with Betty Brant first in the comics.
But too bad they can't do the real reason for the death of his parents, which was because the Red Skull killed them! Also, if they really want to do a dark Spidey story, do the Death of Jean Dewolff and have the Sin-Eater in it! Classic spidey story that everyone should read, next to Kraven's Last Hunt. It would be cool if they got the rights to the Juggernaut. Anyone who knows older spidey comics knows how awesome that would be :)

noooo they gotta stick to villains that were in the cartoons.... most of us aren't die hard comic book junkies... the cartoon series had a larger audience and we don't give a crap about the obscure comic book villains we never heard of

@1badbat seeing Robert Englund ( Freddy) as a comic villan would be epic. He just screams evil.

Boy Hollywood sure likes to milk something to the last cent. I don't have to watch it to know it will be mediocre acting propped up by special effects.

This is another spider man movie hoping to save the franchise with different actors.I'm sorry, but you won't save this super hero movie..not by a long shot. This story line was finished after the last one and leave it up to Exec's from hollywood to ruin yet another cherished comic book character. Fantastic 4, Green lantern, Hulk, and now the upcoming Avengers!? Jesus...give us a break. I commend Stan lee for trying to put his comics on the screen, but I just don't have the patience to sit through yet another turd. Stan Lee...you are a genius for giving us great comics. But hollywood has ruined your beloved empire as far as I'm concerned regardless what the boxoffice sales say about your movies. Time to put the comic hero movies away for good.

If they want to go dark, please, oh please have a setup in this movie for a Kraven's Last Hunt type of sequel. That remains my favorite Spidey story of all time.

Why do they have to always change the suit. Hollywood needs to stop snorting coke. Hell next thing you know. Spiderman, batman, superman will all be the same charactor. I can see it now, after flying all day, superman decides to use his batmobile, and gets it stuck, so he then has to pull it out using his spidy, utility, super web rope. Hollywood ! YOUR FIRED !
