Forget Justice League and Worlds of DC for a moment, because Zack Snyder's new Netflix movie Army of the Dead is tipped to launch its very own franchise.

Speaking exclusively in the latest issue of Digital Spy magazine about his plans for Army of the Dead's future, the director revealed that the ending of Dave Bautista's zombie epic inspired the idea of a "bigger world".

We already knew that the 'bigger world' would include a prequel movie, Army of Thieves, as well as an anime series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, but now we know how that expansion came about.

Outlining the process of mapping out an extended Army universe, Snyder explained: "Well, we definitely were in the works on everything else kind of in production.

"We kind of started to say, 'Oh, we could do…' I mean, because literally it just came from the notion that it's got a cliffhanger kind of an ending – as it would; it's genre, and so it implies a bigger world."

Adding that "deconstruction" in the genre "works", Snyder went on to tease the tone of Matthias Schweighöfer's sequel – "a romantic-comedy slash heist movie", of course.

As well a promise that any questions posed by Army of the Dead will "to some extent, absolutely" be answered by either the prequel movie or anime series, we also learned that Army of Thieves will be "very international".

Recalling the guidance he received from Snyder, Matthias Schweighöfer said that he was told: "'Dream big. Create your universe – your best version. And just do your movie. This is your movie. Just start it.'

"And that's what I did," Matthias added. "These two films, they're amazing. These two films, it will be, first, Army of the Dead, and then my movie. They will be great... It will be very international, and that's what I can say."
