Zac Efron reveals secret from High School Musical dance

Zac Efron has revealed that his iconic song and dance number from High School Musical 2 was entirely improvised.

One of the 2007 sequel's most memorable moments sees Efron's teen heartthrob Troy Bolton release his pent-up frustration by breaking out into song and dance on a golf course, which, as HSM fans will know, paved the way for yet another iconic number from Troy in the third film ('Scream').

However, fans might be surprised to learn that Efron actually improvised the choreography to 'Bet on It' after director Kenny Ortega told him they didn't have a concept for the song.

During an interview with Still Watching Netflix for his new Netflix rom-com A Family Affair, the actor shared: "That was all improv. And we shot it, I think the whole song, in like three hours."

"When we shot that, we just had no ideas for what to do on the day," he continued. "The director, he was like, 'Dude, we have no concept for this song. What do you want to do?' I was like, 'I don't know, we're on a golf course.'"

Efron shot to stardom after the first High School Musical movie premiered on the Disney Channel back in 2006, with the film becoming an instant hit.

Its sequel arrived in 2007, while the third and final film, High School Musical: Senior Year, premiered in cinemas in 2008.

In 2022, Efron said he would be up for reprising the role of Troy if the opportunity presented itself.

"Of course, of course," he replied when asked if he'd be interested in a reboot. "Seriously, having the opportunity in any form to go back and work with that team would be so amazing. My heart is still there. That would be incredible. I hope it happens."

All three High School Musical movies are available to watch on Disney+.
