A New York woman was arrested for allegedly throwing her newborn baby out of the bathroom window after giving birth in the bath.

Police say the baby was found naked and still with its umbilical cord attached at a home in the Queens area of the city on Sunday morning.

The baby was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical but stable condition and treated for hypothermia.

Authorities say that Sabita Dookram, 23, gave birth to the youngster in the bath before allegedly tossing the baby from the window.

Now she faces charges that include attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment, tampering with physical evidence, abandonment of a child and acting in a manner to injure a child, according to the New York Post.

A neighbour said he heard the baby crying but did not think anything of it as the property is next to a daycare centre.

“I’m kind of still traumatised. I could still hear the cry. I keep thinking to myself I should have came out and looked,” Marvin Ramsammy told NY1.

Neighbours also said the woman’s family did not know she was pregnant.
