Amid the rising spread of the COVID-19 delta variant and new vaccine requirements in New York City, the New York International Auto Show has once again been cancelled. The 2021 show was pushed back to August 20-29 from its usual April dates as a result of the pandemic. Last year's show was cancelled for the same reason as well.

"Over the past few weeks, and especially within the last few days, circumstances have changed making it more difficult to create an event at the high standard that we and our clients expect," show president Mark Schienberg said in a statement. Just yesterday, the show posted on Instagram excitedly noting that the event was less than a month away. Clearly, things have changed dramatically in the last 24 hours.

New York City mayor Bill de Blasio announced yesterday that proof of vaccination against COVID-19 would be required for indoor dining, and entry into gyms, and movie theaters. A final list of places requiring proof of vaccination has yet to be announced, but the New York Times reports that museums are expected to be added to the list. We've reached out to a show representative for the show to find out if the mayor's announcement directly led to the event's cancellation.

Nissan scheduled an event to reveal the new Z before the show on the evening of the 17th in Brooklyn, and Subaru planned on unveiling the 2022 WRX at the show's press preview day on the 19th. We've reached out to representatives for both automakers to find out if and how the show's cancellation affects their plans.

Organizers are planning on holding the 2022 New York International Auto Show next April, returning the event to its traditional dates.
