SLED: York County, SC deputies shoot armed person south of Rock Hill

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article based on information from law enforcement officials said an individual fired a weapon. Officials have since stated that they have no evidence the person’s weapon was fired. The incident is under investigation.

An armed person was shot by York County Sheriff’s Office deputies Friday afternoon, officials said.

In early reports, officials said the subject had fired a weapon, officials said.

York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson said Friday evening that there is no evidence at this time that the subject fired the weapon. However, Tolson said there is no doubt the subject was armed, and officers believed him to be a threat.

“We are thankful that our deputies are physically OK, and our prayers go out for the subject involved,” Tolson said.

Tolson said any further comment on the investigation would come from SLED, the agency that now is handling the investigation. SLED was notified by York County deputies to respond and investigate because of the involvement of York County deputies, Tommy Crosby, spokesman for the State Law Enforcement Division said.

The shooting happened around 2:15 p.m. in the 300 block of S.C. 324 between Rock Hill and the Chester County border in South Carolina, Crosby said.

In a statement around 6 p.m Friday, Crosby said: “Agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating an incident from today in which shots were fired during a confrontation between a man and deputies from the York County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were responding to a call to conduct a wellness check on the individual when the shooting took place. The armed man was shot during the incident and has been taken to the hospital. No other injuries have been reported.”

Crosby said in the statement SLED’s goal is to conduct a thorough, independent criminal investigation as timely possible under the circumstances.

“SLED investigators will conduct interviews with all potential witnesses in this matter. the statement said. “Further, SLED will collect all relevant evidence and will forensically test such evidence as needed.”

The names of the deputies involved have not been released.

The incident Friday was the 13th officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2021, SLED said in the statement. In 2020, there were 49 officer involved shootings in South Carolina, and two of those involved the York County Sheriff’s Office, according to SLED.
