The “fallout,” such as it is, continues from Cam Newton‘s ill-fated decision earlier this week to call out a female reporter for having the temerity to ask him about passing routes.
Newton’s dismissive cut at a Charlotte Observer reporter cost him a sponsorship with Dannon Yogurt’s Oikos brand. In turn, Dannon has signed Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott as a replacement … or, more likely, ramped up an announcement that was already in the works. (You don’t just sign the quarterback of America’s Team to a national advertising deal in three days unless somebody’s getting fleeced.)
This marks the latest in a slate of sponsorships that will pay Prescott $3 million this year, dwarfing his Cowboys salary of $544,000. In addition to Dannon, ESPN notes that Prescott has deals with Beats By Dre, Tostitos, Campbell’s Chunky Soup, Pepsi, 7-Eleven, New Era Caps, AT&T, Panini and Nicholas Air.
And what of Newton? Well, after an apology in which he regretted his “extremely degrading and disrespectful” choice of words, he’s giving the public impression of having a change of heart. He’s sported a “Rosie the Riveter” pin on his hat while traveling to Detroit on Saturday and to Ford Field Sunday morning. “Rosie the Riveter,” a propaganda figure from World War II, embodies and celebrates female empowerment in traditionally male-dominated worlds. History has no word on whether Rosie could speak confidently about pass routes, but we wouldn’t put it past her.
