‘Yellowstone’ season 5 premiere date announced, filming underway. Here’s what we know

Saddle up, the fifth season of “Yellowstone” will premiere on Sunday, Nov. 13.

Paramount Network announced the release date of the upcoming season Wednesday. The news comes days after it was announced that filming had begun on the new season in Montana.

“Yellowstone” follows Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, a Montana rancher who along with his family face off against foes encroaching on their land. “Yellowstone” is Paramount Network’s flagship show, whose fourth season finale in early January scored the largest cable TV audience since 2017.

The show first premiered in the summer of 2018, quickly gaining popularity as a audience standout with fan-favorite characters and enticing writing. Subsequent seasons released in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

“Yellowstone” is so big, it has spawned its own universe of shows under series creator Taylor Sheridan. Before the “Yellowstone” breakout, Sheridan wrote several movies including “Sicario” and “Hell or High Water,” the latter earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

The first “Yellowstone” spinoff series, “1883,” premiered in the fall of 2021 and finished its one-season run earlier this year. The series served as a prequel for the flagship show about the Dutton family traversing through the Great Plains, led by actors Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Sam Elliott.

“1883” filmed in Fort Worth by the Stockyards. The asphalt roadways were covered with dirt, and the street was transformed to be more period accurate.

Even though “1883” only had one season, the story of the Dutton family will continue in the next prequel show, “1932.” News broke on Tuesday that Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren would star in the new show.

For fans of “1883,” it was announced Wednesday that the upcoming Bass Reeves show produced by Sheridan would be an offshoot of the prequel series and is now titled “1883: The Bass Reeves Story.” The show follows Bass Reeves, the historical figure who was the first Black deputy U.S. Marshal, rumored as the inspiration for the fictional “Lone Ranger.”

It’s unclear whether the Bass Reeves series will feature any characters from “1883,” but serving as an offshoot to the prequel series could mean a friendly face or two might show up if Sheridan wants it.

The first four seasons of “Yellowstone” are streaming on Peacock for subscribers. “1883” is streaming on Paramount Plus for subscribers.
