“Mother’s Day means many things to many different kinds of moms. There are new moms, old moms, mothers who have lost their mothers, mothers who have lost a child, those with hard relationships with their mothers or strained relationships with their child, those patiently waiting to be mothers, foster moms, stepmoms, solo moms, tiger moms, tired moms!”

In honor of Mother’s Day, we invited artist, Kelly Colchin to redefine the Yahoo Logo inspired by the experience of motherhood in all its unique and special ways.

As a motherless mother of two, the day holds bittersweet emotions for Kelly.

“I hoped to capture the duality of this day as I experience it every year and encourage hope and connection for all the other mothers out there.”

Drawing on her own experiences and love of nature, Kelly connected to the natural world and a tradition of enjoying the outdoors as a family.

“There is nothing better than being outside with my kids. They completely lose themselves and go wild. It’s such a good lesson for me.”

When it came time to artistically express motherhood, Kelly wanted the illustration to speak to and connect to all mothers on this special day.

“I hope that people are encouraged to hold space for all moms on Mother’s Day and that moms are inspired to do a little mothering for themselves no matter where they are on their journey.”

Inspired by the tradition of nature she enjoyed with her family and drawing on the abundance of care mothers represent in any form, the redesigned logo feels fresh and familiar all at once. The design is intended to help us feel connected to that natural experience and, ultimately Kelly hopes to help people hold time for each other and celebrate their loved ones.

“Mother’s Day is a good day to reflect but also to check in with your friends and family. Share some love and hold your loved ones a little tighter if you can!”
