X-Men: Apocalypse Running Into Box Office Trouble?

Following its recent advertising campaign debacle, it appears that ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ could be running into a spot of bother at the box office too.

Take up for the latest in Fox’s Marvel franchise has taken a significant dive following its second week on release.

It dropped a worrying 66%’s worth of business, dropping to $22.3 million (£15.4 million) over last weekend.

That makes it the lowest second week haul since the stand-alone 'Wolverine’ movie from 2013, with the movie also suffering from a lower-than-expected first weekend gross too, that of $67.5 million (£46.7 million).

The movie has done better overseas, with $268 million coming in, making the total up to $402 million (£278 million) in all.

While the movie cost $178 million (£123 million) to make, it’s thought that it will be unlikely to come close to its predecessor’s gross, 'X-Men: Days of Future Past’, which made $747 million (£517 million) and is the highest-grossing 'X-Men’ movie to date.

It also compares pretty badly to its other recent competition, 'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’, which made $166 million (£115 million) on its opening weekend.

The considerably cheaper 'Deadpool’ – which cost $58 million (£40 million) to make – has proved wildly more successful too, bringing home $772.3 million (£535 million).

Though the film is not yet being considered a flop, it’s likely that not achieving the results of its predecessor so far will be a disappointment to Fox.

The reviews were not stellar either, with a pretty poor 48% 'fresh’ rating on reviews aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

Nevertheless, more films from the Marvel canon are in the pipeline from Fox, including a 'Gambit’ movie, set to star Channing Tatum, another X-Men movie set in the 90s, and New Mutants and X-Force films planned too.
