The new trailer for Wonka shows off Hugh Grant’s singing skills, with the star performing a rendition of a classic song.

The upcoming musical-fantasy film sees Timothée Chalamet play the iconic chocolatier, with the story focusing on his path from young boy to eccentric genius.

The latest trailer depicts his rivalry with various upper-class men, and an amusing exchange with Hugh Grant’s Oompa-Loompa, who could be heard singing his character's signature song.

The trailer also showcases the fantastical and colourful world created by the production crew, with Paddington director Paul King helming the project. The filmmaker recently spoke about his lead star, revealing that Chalamet didn’t have to audition for the role.

“It was a straight offer because he’s great and he was the only person in my mind who could do it,” said King. “Because he’s Timothée Chalamet and his life is so absurd, his high school musical performances are on YouTube and have hundreds of thousands of views.

“I knew from stanning [Chalamet] that he could sing and dance really well. I knew that was in his arsenal, but I didn’t know how good he was. When I spoke to him he was quite keen. He’d done tap dancing in high school and he was like, ‘I’d quite like to show people I can do that.’”

King isn’t the only crew member to praise Chalamet, with Olivia Colman saying that her co-star had given a “magical” performance: “He’s doing something different. It’s such a treat. He’s so beautiful on-screen. He’s magical,” she said.

Chalamet, who is also set to appear in Dune: Part Two, previously outlined his motivations for taking on the role of the chocolatier, revealing that the character’s eccentricities afforded the crew some creativity.

“The dream as an artist is to throw whatever the f**k you want at the wall,” he said. “I guess what I'm realising is that one's personal life, one's adult life, can be quite boring and the artist's life can still be extraordinary.”

Wonka is scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 8 in the UK, and December 15 in the US.
