Wonka's first trailer has finally arrived, giving us our best look yet at Timothée Chalamet's take on the classic Roald Dahl character.

The new movie was described by writer/director Paul King at a trailer preview event, which Digital Spy attended, as a "companion piece" to the classic 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka.

Even though we don't get any songs in the trailer, King promised that Wonka will feature song and dance performances, including original songs by Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy and spins on classic songs such as 'Pure Imagination'.

And while the trailer doesn't have these songs, it does at least end with a hilarious introduction to Hugh Grant's Oompa Loompa in the movie.

Chalamet had previously been seen in character with a photo from the set, leading several fans to thirst over his appearance – much to his amusement.

"You know what's really funny about that is it's so misleading. This movie is so sincere, it's so joyous," he said of the public reaction to the photo, before outlining his motivations for taking on the role.

"I hate to say it, but the dream as an artist is to throw whatever the f**k you want at the wall, you know? And I guess what I'm realising is that one's personal life, one's adult life, can be quite boring and the artist's life can still be extraordinary."

Wonka's cast also includes Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, Paterson Joseph, Mathew Baynton and Matt Lucas.

Colman, who plays a villain in the movie, praised Chalamet's performance as Willy Wonka in December 2022: "He's doing something different. It's such a treat. He's so beautiful on-screen. He's magical."

Based on this first trailer, it seems like she was onto something.

Wonka will be released in cinemas on December 15.
