Wonka crosses $150 million as it tops US box office

Wonka – Timothée Chalamet's musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – has topped the US box office and crossed $150 million globally.

The film, which is an origin story of the eccentric chocolatier, opened to $39 million in the US box office.

The Paul King-directed movie was released a week earlier internationally and has taken $112.4 million outside of the US, bringing the worldwide total so far to $151.4 million.

The Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was second in the US box office this weekend with $5.8 million. Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron was third with $5.1 million.

Wonka features an all-star cast, including Olivia Colman, Rowan Atkinson, Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins, Paterson Joseph and more, as well as Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa and Calah Lane as Wonka's friend Noodle.

Reviews for the film following its premiere were mainly positive. Wonka currently sits at 84% with critics on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

In a three-star review, Digital Spy said: "Wonka doesn't quite become the delicious confection it wants to be, but there are still enough sweet treats along the way."

Colman, who plays the villainous Mrs Scrubitt in the movie, recently praised Chalamet's performance in the film as "magical".

“He’s doing something different. It’s such a treat. He’s so beautiful on-screen. He’s magical," she said.

Chalamet's next film will be the Dune sequel, which will also star Florence Pugh alongside Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, and Dave Bautista.

Wonka is currently playing in both UK and US cinemas.
