'Wonder Woman' Is America's Not-So-Secret Weapon in New Trailer

It takes a woman to win a war in Wonder Woman, the next superhero film in the DC Extended Universe. The new trailer explains why the Amazon princess Diana (Gal Gadot) leaves her isolated homeland to fight alongside American troops in World War I as Wonder Woman. Although she finds turn-of-the-century fashions restrictive — “How can a woman possibly fight in this?” she asks while trying on a corseted dress — her bullet-deflecting bracelets and warrior skills are definitely an asset to the Allies.

This trailer suggests that Wonder Woman will take the form of a flashback, beginning with modern-day Diana (as seen in Batman v Superman) reminiscing about a time when she was a more idealistic fighter. (She looks the same in both time periods, because unlike the now-grizzled Batman, she’s immortal.)

“I used to want to save the world, this beautiful place,” she says. “But the closer you get, the more you see the great darkness within.”

We get an extended look at Themyscira, the all-female island where Diana was raised, which is drawn into the war when lost troops (including fighter pilot Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine) stumble upon its shores. Unlike her fellow Amazons, Diana chooses to leave the island and join the fight, believing it is her “sacred duty to defend the world.” And while she’s posing as Trevor’s “secretary” in her civilian life, she goes full Wonder Woman on the battlefield, right down to the Sword of Athena and Lasso of Truth. Wonder Woman opens in theaters June 2, 2017.
