Warner Bros. has made it official: Wonder Woman 1984 debuted in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. The sequel—starring Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Pine—started streaming on Christmas Day, December 25, at no additional cost to subscribers.

“At some point you have to choose to share any love and joy you have to give, over everything else. We love our movie as we love our fans, so we truly hope that our film brings a little bit of joy and reprieve to all of you,” director Patty Jenkins said in a Twitter post. “Happy holidays to all of you. We hope you enjoy our film as much as we enjoyed making it.”

Warner Bros. studio also recently announced that it would release its entire 2021 slate, including WW84, Dune, and the Matrix 4, on HBO Max.

What’s Wonder Woman 1984 about?

Wonder Woman 1984 is the sequel to Jenkins’s acclaimed 2017 Wonder Woman, and it picks up decades after the original, with Diana Prince living in the 1980s. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War era—with most of our hero’s loved ones long gone—Pedro Pascal has described the film as a story about greed. He’s playing the sinister Maxwell Lord, while Wiig’s role is that of villain Barbara Minerva, a.k.a. the Cheetah.

“We’ve all waited a long time for this one to come. I can’t tell you how excited I am for all of you to see this movie,” star Gal Gadot wrote in a tweet. “We feel the movie has never been so relevant, and we hope that it’ll bring some joy, hope, and love to your hearts. Wonder Woman 1984 is a special one for me, and I can only hope it’ll be as special to you, too.”
