TikToker turns plastic bags into 'plarn' to crochet her own trendy fashion items: 'The coolest thing I've seen'

A thrifty TikToker is using “plarn” to crochet her trendy fashion pieces.

Decode and demystify Gen Z's latest online slang terms with In The Know's new glossary.

Plarn is yarn made out of upcycled plastic. Grace Xu is pretty much a crocheting expert with a chic fashion sense. She has created crop tops, hats and skirts with her supreme crochet skills. To make her designs a bit more sustainable, she found a way to transform plastic shopping bags into yarn. Not only is this a great way to save money, but it’s also an ingenious way to keep plastic out of landfills and oceans.

Here's how to protect yourself from shady sneaker resellers and buyers

“First, just flatten out your bag,” Xu explained. “Then start folding it into a strip that’s a few inches wide. You’re going to cut loops from that strip.”

After folding the bag lengthwise until it was about three inches wide, she cut it into vertical strips. She unraveled each strip so that it was a loop.

“You’re going to open up those loops, cross and intersect them and pull, she said. “You’re going to repeat this until you have one long string that you can wind up into a ball.”

Using the method, Xu was able to crochet a tote bag, bucket hat and vest.

The video tutorial racked up 3.3 million views on TikTok.

“Wow, maybe I should start learning how to knit,” one user said.

“My grandma has done this for years. It’s so cool,” another commented.

“I’m in love with this, it’s the coolest thing I’ve seen,” someone added.
