Woman snaps selfie atop car as it sinks into frozen river, Canada photo shows

Zachary King didn’t know what to think when a bright yellow car zoomed past his children practicing ice hockey on the frozen Rideau River near Ottawa, Canada.

“Out of nowhere this car just roared by us driving right in the middle of the river,” King told a local radio station, The Ottawa Citizen reported.

King and other neighbors rushed to help after the car plunged through the ice Sunday, Jan. 16, and began to sink, CTV News reported. Then something strange happened.

Standing on the rear window of her sinking car, the woman pulled out a phone and snapped some photos of herself.

“She captured the moment with a selfie while people hurried and worried to help her,” Lynda Douglas wrote on Twitter with a photo of the woman.

Onlookers used a rope and kayak to pull the woman to safety just before her car became fully submerged, The Ottawa Citizen reported.

In a Twitter post, Ottawa police reported the woman was not hurt in the crash near Manotick.

“Another reminder that ‘No Ice Is Safe Ice,’ police wrote. “Please use extreme caution this winter season!”

She has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, CTV News reported.
