Woman terrifies her fiancé with unusual home decorations: ‘He asked me to take him to the hospital’

If you woke up tomorrow morning to a fully decorated Christmas tree in your living room with no memory of putting it there, you’d probably have a few questions — especially considering it’s literally April.

Well, Mackenzie Lynn Smith, a 23-year-old nurse and content creator from Illinois, pranked her fiancé, 23-year-old Jake Maldonado, with this exact scenario, and the result was nothing short of spectacular.

In a TikTok video that has since been viewed over 18.7 million times, Smith, whose handle is @kenzielynnsmith, detailed how she was able to convince Maldonado that he had woken up on Christmas, just “to trip him out.”

First, Smith decorated their entire home with Christmas garb, including a whole tree with gifts underneath, a wreath and stockings. Next, she went above and beyond to replace her fiancé’s phone screen while he slept so that the date read “December 25.”

When Maldonado woke up, he seemed to believe he found himself nine months ahead of the date when he fell asleep the night prior.

And, to make matters more believable, one of the couple’s roommates even committed to the bit, at one point telling the prank victim he was on his way to his mom’s house to celebrate the holiday.

TikTokers were entertained by the harmless but convincing prank, which Smith later assured to In The Know was all done in good spirit.

“This is the most innocent and wholesome gaslighting I’ve ever seen,” one user wrote.

“HE LOOKS TERRIFIED,” wrote another.

“This is a Jim and Pam vs Dwight level prank and I am HERE for it,” said a third, referencing the infamous prank war featured in The Office.

Smith, who has over 2 million followers on the platform and is famous for her light-hearted prank videos, told In The Know that she was first inspired to pull the Christmas prank one morning after having trouble sleeping.

“I woke up really early in the morning and could not sleep so I tried thinking of something funny I could do that I could also film and use for a video, of course,” she said. “A ‘Christmas-y’ TikTok video came on my For You Page and that’s when I got the idea. Jake is a pretty heavy sleeper so I basically snuck out of the room and got all of the bins from the garage that the Christmas decorations are stored in and I started to decorate the house.”

Smith said that when Maldonado — who boasts 6 million followers on TikTok — was finally let in on the prank, he felt relieved to know he hadn’t mysteriously time traveled … or worse.

“His reaction was definitely relieved when he found out it was a prank,” she shared. “He actually asked me to take him to the hospital before he knew it wasn’t real because he thought he was losing his memory. I felt bad for scaring him, but afterward, we both laughed at the video.”
