Woman, 34, found stabbed to death at home in Canning Town

A 34-year-old mother has been found stabbed to death at home in east London - the second woman killed in the capital this week.

Police were called to reports of an assault at a flat in Burrard Road, Canning Town at 6.25am on Thursday.

Officers attended with paramedics and discovered the victim suffering from stab wounds.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man, aged 34, who police say is known to the victim, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

Detectives are working to identify and inform the woman’s next of kin. The investigation continues.

Neighbours said she was a “lovely” mother who had only moved in recently with her children.

One resident told the Standard: “I was the last person back in the block at 2am, it was all quiet.

“Then my wife woke me up and said the police were outside.”

He added: “I saw the woman getting her kids ready to go to school in the morning, minding her own business and looking after her kids. She was only young.

“Things happen in the street, it’s understandable, but not in the home where you’d think you are safe.

“This area has become so bad recently. The Government need to do something - this isn’t Karachi or some third world country.”

Another neighbour said: “She was a lovely woman who only moved in a couple of months ago.

“She always stopped to speak to my baby grandchildren and say hello. It’s unbelievably sad.”

DCI Mark Rogers, who is leading the investigation said: “This is a tragic incident which understandably will cause shock to the local community. I want to reassure them that my team of skilled homicide detectives are already working diligently to piece together the events that led to this murder.“We have arrested a man who remains in police custody and at this time we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”

It is the second fatal stabbing of a young female in London this week, prompting fears for the safety of women and girls.

Ania Jedrkowiak, 21, was found with multiple knife wounds in an alleyway off Church Gardens, South Ealing shortly after midnight on Tuesday. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her former partner Dennis Akpomedaye, 29, has been charged with the murder.

Akpomedaye, from Newport, South Wales, remains in custody and is due to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
