Wolves vs West Brom result: Player ratings as Matheus Pereira brace secures first win for Sam Allardyce

West Bromwich Albion stunned Wolves to win the Black Country derby 3-2 at Molineux.

Matheus Pereira calmly gave the visitors the lead from the spot after a clumsy challenge from Willy Boly, with VAR controversially claiming the foul was inside the penalty area.

Boly made amends as he backheeled an assist for Fabio Silva to equalise before the centre-back gave them the lead.

In the second half, Semi Ajayi equalised for West Brom with a looping header before a second Pereira penalty gave the visitors the lead once more.

The Baggies held strong despite Wolves' pressure to emerge from the first derby in nine years with all three points.

The win takes West Brom to within three points of safety from the relegation zone, while Wolves’ season continues to stutter as they lie in 14th place.

Wolves

Rui Patricio – 6. The Portuguese international could do little about the goals, and he made a fine stop to deny Robinson in the first half.

Nelson Semedo – 6. The usually bombarding right-back let Adama get forward today, and he dealt with Grosicki fairly well.

Willy Boly – 7. After a clumsy challenge to concede a penalty in his return to the side, Boly recovered impressively to assist Silva’s equaliser and even score the second.

Conor Coady – 4. The England international calmly distributed the ball about but both he and Boly were caught napping after a flicked header found Robinson and it was an incredibly clumsy challenge to concede the second penalty of the game – not his day.

Romain Saiss – 6. Quiet today, but that is not a bad thing for a defender.

Ruben Neves – 5. Neves had been in decent form heading into this clash, but he struggled to assert himself in midfield and gave the ball away on a number of occasions.

Joao Moutinho – 7. He battled hard in midfield and dictated the tempo well.

Leander Dendoncker – 6. The Belgian missed a great chance to equalise when he blazed an effort over the top and he was particularly wasteful when he found himself in attacking positions.

Adama Traore – 7. He had Gibbs on skates for most of the match, but the tactic to keep crossing the ball without a true aerial presence was rather odd.

Pedro Neto – 8. The winger was Wolves’ best spark going forward, which is becoming a common theme. He provided an excellent final ball on several occasions and is establishing himself as a premier offensive player in the Premier League.

Fabio Silva – 7. Despite Wolves’ persistence to cross the ball, the teenager finally had a chance with his feet and took it in style to equalise. He made a dazzling run to open the second half and could have had a second soon after.

West Brom

David Button – 6. He made several comfortable saves to keep West Brom in front, and could do little about the pair of goals that swung the game in Wolves’ favour.

Dara O’Shea - 6. The right-back made a crucial intervention to deny Silva’s pull back but struggled to deal with Neto.

Semi Ajayi – 6. Booked for a professional foul on Dendoncker before failing to deal with the scramble that led to Boly’s goal. His looped header put West Brom back on level terms.

Kyle Bartley – 8. Brilliantly defended a dangerous cross from Neto in his first league start under Allardyce, and was solid throughout – particularly to deny both Boly and Silva in the second half.

Kieran Gibbs – 4. The former-Arsenal fullback was perhaps lucky to get away with a handball in the area, and he was completely dominated by Adama.

Jake Livermore – 6. The West Brom captain defended well, but struggled to impose himself in midfield, allowing Wolves to dominate.

Romaine Sawyers – 5. Sawyers was completely anonymous.

Robert Snodgrass – 5. He made a crunching challenge on Silva in the first half, which highlights how the winger did his defensive duties for his side but struggled to get forward.

Matheus Pereira – 7. The Brazilian calmly sent Patricio the wrong way from the spot on two separate occasions to give West Brom the lead each time and he was a threat going forward, but was wasteful with several easy passes.

Kamil Grosicki – 6. The Pole constantly made himself available down the left but he was kept quiet by Semedo.

Callum Robinson – 7. Robinson worked hard throughout the derby, dropping deep when needed as well as making clever runs forward evidenced by his winning of a penalty. Unlucky to be denied by Patricio, although he might have been offside, and he dragged a finish wide in the second half.
