The Witcher Season 2 on Netflix: What you need to know

The Witcher Season 2 will be the highly anticipated follow-up to the hit low fantasy Netflix show. After a few hiccups, the second season is back in full production mode.

First off, toss a coin to Henry Cavill and congratulate him on his recovery. The actor suffered a minor injury on set, but it was enough to sideline him and delay production. He also happens to be a famously devoted PC gamer, so he spent the time upgrading his high-end gaming PC with a $1,500 part while waiting for his leg to heal.

But now that Cavill is better, production has resumed. Unfortunately, the showrunners haven’t offered a precise release date due to the difficulties of filming during a pandemic. In a Reddit AMA done last year, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (thanks, GameSpot) wrote that her team was aiming for a 2021 release while also stressing that they didn’t want to rush things.

“We don’t yet have a target launch date for S2, past 2021,” Hissrich replied to a user on Reddit. “We don’t want to rush the product. That doesn’t benefit anyone.”

Hissrich also assured fans that the second season of the Netflix show will be easier to follow than the first, describing it as “much more linear.” This was undoubtedly in response to the structure of The Witcher Season 1, which jumped through different characters and timelines from episode to episode.

Many viewers found this narrative approach disorienting and confusing. In fact, the Netflix Witcher subreddit even published a FAQ on how to decipher the first season’s constant time jumps.

But now that the three main characters — Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri — have all converged with one another, we’ll get a much more traditional second season. As for the storyline, here’s the official synopsis from Netflix (thanks, ComicBook):

“Convinced Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, Geralt of Rivia brings Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows, his childhood home of Kaer Morhen. While the Continent’s kings, elves, humans and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside.”
