Motion to impeach South Korean president over short-lived martial law is submitted
The surprise declaration late on Tuesday ignited a standoff with parliament which rejected President Yoon Suk Yeol's attempt to ban political activity and censor the media. Oil prices inch up on geopolitical tensions, OPEC+ supply plans
SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Oil prices firmed on Wednesday as market participants weighed up geopolitical tensions and the prospect of OPEC+ extending supply cuts against weaker demand. Brent crude futures rose 23 cents, or 0.3%, to $73.85 a barrel by 0700 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures gained 19 cents, or 0.3%, to $70.13. A shaky ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, South Korea's curtailed declaration of martial law and a rebel offensive in Syria that threatens to draw in forces from several oil-producing countries, all lent support to oil prices, said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at Phillip Nova.

What to know about South Korea and its short-lived martial law
South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol faced parliamentary moves to impeach him after he sent heavily armed troops into Seoul's streets with his baffling and sudden declaration of martial law that harkened to the country’s past dictatorships. Opposition parties submitted the impeachment motion just hours after parliament unanimously voted to cancel Yoon's declaration, forcing him to lift martial law about six hours after it began. Impeaching Yoon requires the support of two-thirds of the National Assembly and at least six of the nine Constitutional Court justices.

Discontent runs high as Ghana readies to vote on Saturday
Public frustration over Ghana's economic travails, including high prices and a dearth of jobs, has dominated the run-up to Saturday's general election, which will likely test the nation's longstanding democratic credentials. Support for outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo and his ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) party has sunk in his second term amid the West African nation's worst economic crisis in a generation, along with cost-of-living protests and turmoil in its vital cocoa and gold industries. Indeed, the clamour for change has tipped the presidential and legislative race firmly in favour of opposition leader John Dramani Mahama and his National Democratic Congress party, polls show, though voter patience with the political process is running low.
