Wimbledon LIVE: Andy Murray defeated in four sets by John Isner after Emma Raducanu also exits

Wimbledon enters day three at the All England Club but home favourite Emma Raducanu is out of the tournament after a 6-3 6-3 defeat to Caroline Garcia sealed a second-round exit from the Championships. Hopes were high for Raducanu as she returned to Centre Court but was second best to Garcia as the Frenchwoman displayed clean hitting and power in taking the victory in straight sets.

Andy Murray will look to lift the mood, with the two-time Wimbledon champion next in actin on Centre with the prospect of some late drama against the big-serving John Isner. Earlier, Novak Djokovic raced to a 6-1 6-4 6-2 win against the Australian 26-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis, that was as comfortable as the scoreline suggests.

Cameron Norrie (vs Jaume Munar), Heather Watson (vs Qiang Wang) and Harriet Dart (vs Rebeka Masarova) will look to keep up the momentum from an impressive first two days for British players at SW19. The journey is over for Ryan Peniston, however, after the 26-year-old debutant fell in straight sets to experienced American Steve Johnson.

Elsewhere the exciting Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz (vs Tallon Griekspoor) and women’s world No2 Ons Jabeur (vs Katarzyna Kawa) take to Court 2 and Court 3 respectively this afternoon, while Wimbledon champions Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza also feature on Court 2.

Wimbledon 2022: Andy Murray vs John Isner

17:53 , Jamie Braidwood

Andy Murray takes on John Isner next, as the 35-year-old looks to advance to the third round.

Emma Raducanu knocked out of Wimbledon by France’s Caroline Garcia

17:50 , Jamie Braidwood

Emma Raducanu has been knocked out of Wimbledon by Caroline Garcia in the second round. The 19-year-old US Open champion was overpowered by her French opponent’s fierce serve and groundstrokes as she went down 6-3, 6-3 on Centre Court.

Breaking report by my colleague Lawrence Ostlere here on Centre Court.

Emma Raducanu knocked out of Wimbledon by France’s Caroline Garcia

Wimbledon 2022: Emma Raducanu 3-6 3-6 Caroline Garcia - Game, set and match

17:42 , Jamie Braidwood

The stats show just how Garcia was able to hit Raducanu off the court. She had 25 winners to Raducanu’s 10 and the British No 1 was unable to do enough from behind the baseline, nor in the return game.

There will be plenty of noise and reaction after this second-round exit, but it should all be taken with the reminder that Raducanu’s only full match before today of her grass-court campaign came on Monday due to the side-strain injury that disrupted her preparations.

Let’s hope she can get a more consistent run of matches under her belt as she heads to the US for the hard-court swing.

Wimbledon 2022: Emma Raducanu 3-6 3-6 Caroline Garcia - Game, set and match

17:37 , Jamie Braidwood

Caroline Garcia gives a very nice on-court interview, but there are very few people listening as the atmosphere goes flat. This was not the result an expectant Centre Court crowd were hoping for, but there should still be a touch of context given Raducanu’s inexperience on tour and disrupted preparation for the tournament. Still, after her performance in the opening match, a second-round exit does sting.

Wimbledon 2022: Emma Raducanu 3-6 3-6 Caroline Garcia - Game, set and match

17:33 , Jamie Braidwood

It’s brutal, but a fair result. Garcia was the better play on the day and there is no wave from Raducanu as she exits Centre Court.

17:32 , Jamie Braidwood

Garcia stays on top of the baseline rallies and Raducanu nets, still struggling to adjust to the pace. Centre Court responds at 0-15, but Raducanu nets again as Garcia attacks the forehand.

That’s better, though, as she thows in a drop shot and then puts the ball behind Garcia, and a big serve gets her to 30-30.

Huge point. Raducanu lands the serve down the middle but Garcia is able to hang up the return! Raducanu can’t do enough on the ball, and she eventually nets.

Wimbledon 2022: Emma Raducanu 3-6 1-0 Caroline Garcia*

Raducanu starts the second set on serve. Although her opening win came in straight sets, that was unusual for Raducanu this season, with all of her other matches in 2022 going to three sets. This, therefore, is hopefully not a shock to the system but she will need to keep her composure if she wants to get back into this.

Raducanu on Garcia, the world No 55 who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2017:

Emma Raducanu knows quick wins could be key to Wimbledon hopes

15:53 , Jamie Braidwood

Emma Raducanu is hoping to rediscover her grand slam efficiency at Wimbledon this year.

The 19-year-old famously did not drop a set through 10 matches at the US Open having also claimed three straight-sets wins at Wimbledon.

Since then, though, Raducanu has found herself dragged into a number of long matches, and her opening-round victory over Alison Van Uytvanck on Monday was her first two-set match at a slam since the US Open final.

With her history of injury niggles and recent recovery from a side strain, avoiding staying on court too long could be crucial to Raducanu’s hopes of a good run, and she will be looking for more of the same against France’s Caroline Garcia on Wednesday.

“I think that it helps at slams that you get a day off in between, so I think that is pretty valuable,” said Raducanu.

“I felt good out there. There were some tough moments in the second set (against Van Uytvanck) physically, but I told myself, ‘Push through, if you win in two sets, then you don’t have to play three’. That’s the tactic.”

Raducanu on how she gets “fired up” for the grand slams.

“I’d say big matches and big occasions are the ones that I really sort of get the most fired up for. It’s definitely a different feeling. I love playing on the big stages, big occasions.

“I think that instead of, like, shying away from it, I really thrive in that. It’s special to come through the first round because first rounds are always tricky. There’s definitely an element of, I haven’t done this before, I haven’t played on Centre Court, you haven’t played a match at that tournament.”

A gentle warm-up to the action on Centre Court as Djokovic cruises to a comfortable win. Up next, Emma Raducanu returns to Centre Court to face Caroline Garcia, as she looks to build on her impressive opening victory against Alison Van Uytvanck.

It was a tricky first-round match for Raducanu, but it was great to see the British No 1 adjust to the challenge and begin to open up on her forehand side. The 19-year-old will try to take that mentality into this second round match against France’s Garcia, an opponent Raducanu defeated at Indian Wells earlier this year.

The French Open finalist leaves Wimbledon after just the second round, not that he was expected to go far in SW19. Ruud is not a strong player on the grass and his seeding of third overall rather masked that. Still, it opens up that quarter of the draw and it could be good news for Cameron Norrie - who has taken the opening set 6-4 against Jaume Munar.
