Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: Cameron Norrie vs David Goffin latest score and updates from quarter-final match

Wimbledon 2022 - LIVE!

Cameron Norrie contests the first Grand Slam quarter-final of his career against David Goffin this afternoon. The British No1 had never previously gone beyond the third round of a major tournament before an impressive run at the All England Club that has so far included wins over Pablo Andujar, Jaume Munar, Steve Johnson and Tommy Paul.

The draw has no doubt been kind to the ninth seed, who will face his toughest challenge yet against former World No7 Goffin, who has knocked out Radu Albot, Sebastian Baez, Ugo Humbert and Frances Tiafoe so far. Norrie won the only previous meeting between this duo on the ATP Tour, with Goffin retiring hurt while trailing in Barcelona last year.

Despite the sense of occasion around Britain’s top-ranked male player reaching the last eight of his home Grand Slam for the first time, the 25-year-old has not been afforded Centre Court privileges today. Instead, he will be on Court No1 as he battles Goffin for a semi-final berth. Follow the action live below with Malik Ouzia at Wimbledon!

Cameron Norrie seals place among SW19 royalty

20:07 , Marc Mayo

As Government resignations came thick and fast during his time on Court No1, Cameron Norrie simply refused to throw in the towel.

And with it the Wimbledon crowd had a new home favourite now into the semi-finals against a player in Novak Djokovic who has not lost at Wimbledon for five years.

It had all the rollercoaster nature of your typical SW19 Andy Murray late-night thriller, Norrie showing the characteristic fight which has seen him rise into the upper echelons of men’s tennis to win 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Cameron Norrie reacts

19:36 , Marc Mayo

“Honestly, I’m speechless. I can’t even talk. I’m so happy to get through. It wasn’t going my way from the beginning. That was all credit to David. Thanks to you guys I managed to stay as patient as I could. It was great to get over the line. Just winning a match like this… it feels pretty good.”

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-7 Norrie

Ace! Match point Norrie!

A big “Come on!” from the Brit. Can he finish it off?

Not yet - comes to the net prematurely, ducks under one and it lands well in. 40-40.

Goffin errs long this time, second match point coming… this time he’s done it!

19:17 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-6 Norrie

Centre Court on its feet as the players return to the baseline. Terrific defence from Norrie, Goffin blinks first, 15-0.

And again! Top of the net, 30-0. Two points away…

Ooh, that’s long. Very long. 30-15. Nerves? Yep, net, 30-30.

19:14 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-6 Norrie*

Last chance for Norrie to break bethen. He may as well get after the Goffin serve here.

It’s beach tennis stuff at the net, quick reflexes from both, but Norrie comes out on top and is 0-30 to the good.

Long! Three break points!

Long again! Cam Norrie will serve for a place in the Wimbledon semi-finals!

19:10 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-5 Norrie

Right then, without doing a great deal wrong, Cam Norrie is under the pressure of having to serve to stay in the tournament.

Strong start as Goffin’s backhand return finds the net. Next sails long, 30-0.

Ace, unsuccessfully challenged by Goffin, 40-0.

Looked long from Goffin but nothing called and Norrie finds the net, 40-15.

That’s out though! On we go…

19:06 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-4 Norrie*

Goffin has rallied really well on serve during this fifth set, after looking vulnerable in the fourth.

Keeps putting the pressure back on Norrie to do the same.

19:04 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 4-4 Norrie

Some wally shouts “Come on Cameron!” as Norrie’s tossing up a serve and No1 Court groans as one.

It doesn’t put him off his stride, though. Still nothing between them.

19:00 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 4-3 Norrie*

Gasps from the crowd, who think Norrie has gone 15-30 ahead only for Goffin to successfully challenge.

He follows that little boost up with an ace and then holds after a quite brilliant rally in which both men showcased some sensational defensive shots. As you were.

18:56 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 3-3 Norrie

Wahey, we’re back up and running on the board. Norrie 30-0 up and soon holding to love.

18:54 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 3-2 Norrie*

Again, plenty in the crowd trying to come to Norrie’s aid by calling a ball out but he doesn’t need them as the rally continues at Goffin plonks one more definitively out. He holds eventually, though.

Still, the scoreboard is down - if this goes to a tie-break it’s going to be carnage.

18:50 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 2-2 Norrie

Norrie would dearly love something similar on his serve after being made to graft for his last game. Still, though, he’s having trouble with that first serve.

The scoreboard has briefly broken but everyone’s been counting anyway it seems because the crowd erupts as Goffin finds the net on the run.

18:45 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 2-1 Norrie*

Impressive from Goffin, his most comfortable hold in a while. The length of that last game just seems to have taken a bit of the wind out of Norrie’s sail.

18:44 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 1-1 Norrie

Just a quarter of the court left in sunshine now as we draw into the evening. Given we’re into the fifth set, it’s not actually been that long a match yet - just the two-and-three-quarter hours.

Norrie’s first serve has just deserted him for a moment here and Goffin punishes with a crunching forehand return to bring up break point.

The net comes to the Brit’s aid to force deuce and then a brilliant backhand winner takes him to advantage, before Goffin fires wide.

18:36 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 1-0 Norrie*

Is there an immediate opening brewing here at the start of the fifth for Norrie, too?

Nope, from 15-30 down Goffin regains his composure and edges in front as Norrie’s drop shot clips the top of the net.

18:31 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 Norrie

Every point is being roared to the rafters now as Norrie goes 30-0 up thanks to a couple of loose returns from Goffin. Make that 40-0, same reason.

Three set points. The first goes begging with a double-fault, second into the top of the net. Come on lad.

But he takes the third! We’ll go to a decider!

18:28 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-5 Norrie*

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are sat between Tim Henman and Sue Barker away to my right.

They applaud as Goffin finds the centre of the net to give Norrie break point again!

Goffin thinks he’s got away with it with an ace up the middle to hold but Norrie challenges and Hawkeye shows about a millimetre of a gap between ball and line. The Brit gestures to the crowd for more noise and they respond.

We’re back and forth - deuce, advantage, deuce, advantage - but eventually Goffin wobbles and Norrie has the break! He’ll serve for the set…

18:17 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-4 Norrie

Goffin may be a set up but it feels like Norrie is in the ascendancy here. He’s dominating his own service games and asking questions of the Belgian.

Can he find the break?

18:14 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-3 Norrie*

Norrie holds again to more roars. The crowd sense we’re moving towards a pivotal part of this match now, with the next break huge.

Goffin gets himself in a pickle advancing to the net - like a batsman done by a yorker as the ball squeezes between the ground and his racquet.

Goffin errs long and Norrie has break point… but Goffin responds with the overhead to force deuce and draws level in the set again.

18:05 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 2-2 Norrie*

Again, the crowd is up as Norrie senses a glimmer of an opening at 15-30 but his backhand lob is well wide.

“Leave it!” shouts someone as Goffin slices long, but eventually the Belgian holds. 2-2.

17:59 , Malik Ouzia

Goffin* 6-3 5-7 6-2 1-2 Norrie

Plenty of shouts of support from the home crowd here on Court No1. The Princess of Cambridge has made her way over from watching Novak Djokovic on Centre Court to join them.

A big cheer as the Brit holds.

Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 0-1 Norrie*

17:52 , Marc Mayo

A whopping 34 unforced errors from Norrie to Goffin’s 19 at this stage.

Serving to open the fourth set, the Brit watches a shot drop too deep from his opponent to get on the board.

17:48 , Marc Mayo

A comfort break for Norrie before the fourth set, so a bit of a wait until we get back underway.

Set Goffin! Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 Norrie

17:45 , Marc Mayo

Two set points for Goffin and he sits back on an overhit Norrie backhand to go within a set of the semi-finals!

Break! Goffin 6-3 5-7 5-2 Norrie*

17:42 , Marc Mayo

Goffin has words for the gallery after going 30-15 down to Norrie’s serve - not clear what had irked the previously serene Belgian.

He lands a lovely backhand to level up the game and goes on to break the Brit back! This third set is very much still his to lose.

Break! Goffin* 6-3 5-7 4-2 Norrie

17:38 , Marc Mayo

A more routine service victory for Norrie ahead of a break to collect his thoughts. This has certainly not been his typical performance, while Goffin continues to be a bigger challenge than his rank would portray.

The Belgian’s service game is more trouble than he has been used to this set, until he forces Norrie into two reflexive lobs that opens up a chance for an easy smash winner.

A long rally ends with a delectable drop shot by Norrie to arrive at deuce - and he seals the break!

Goffin* 6-3 5-7 4-0 Norrie

17:31 , Marc Mayo

Norrie loses a challenge before dropping 40-15 down and eventually losing the game in a muted Court No1.

Goffin has barely broken a sweat in this third set.

Break! Goffin 6-3 5-7 3-0 Norrie*

17:27 , Marc Mayo

A bit of an ominous start for Norrie in this third set as Goffin races into a 2-0 lead.

Back on serve, a double fault is a rather inauspicious for the home favourite before he loops a forehand too deep.

Goffin converts the first of a handful of break points with ease.

Break! Goffin 6-3 5-7 1-0 Norrie*

17:23 , Marc Mayo

An instant reply from Goffin has Norrie on the back foot once more...

Set Norrie! Goffin* 6-3 5-7 Norrie

17:19 , Marc Mayo

Two set points for Norrie as Wimbledon’s volume rises for the British No1.

Goffin lays a lazy forehand into the net and we are all square!

Meanwhile...

17:15 , Marc Mayo

The winner of this match will face Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals after the Serbian came from two sets down to beat Jannik Sinner on Centre Court.

Goffin 6-3 5-6 Norrie*

17:14 , Marc Mayo

Goffin delivers a lovely forehand to set up an ace finish and claim the tenth game of the second set.

On serve, Norrie is at ease going 40-0 ahead and looks to have more pace about his game as he goes within a break of the second set.

Goffin 6-3 4-5 Norrie

17:08 , Marc Mayo

Not quite the rally from Norrie Court No1 was hoping for as his service game is dragged to deuce.

Goffin is forced wide to deliver a misfire down the left-hand line to provide Norrie the advantage, before a serve aimed around about Goffin’s throat wins him the point.

Break back! Goffin* 6-3 4-4 Norrie

17:02 , Marc Mayo

It might take more than new balls to save Norrie’s Wimbledon with this performance certainly subpar from the British No1, who has been outclassed by the superb world No58 so far.

Goffin’s run of consecutive points ends at nine as Norrie levels the game at 15-15 before unleashing a chunky roar at the sight of Goffin’s shot hitting the net.

Another wayward shot by the Belgian hands Norrie a pair of break points - his first of the match! A delightfully mad rally goes against him before a double-fault secures the break!

Break! Goffin 6-3 4-3 Norrie*

16:58 , Marc Mayo

Goffin makes it 3-3 without any reply and it is soon seven points in a row as he launches 40-0 ahead on Norrie’s serve.

The Brit attempts a drop-shot to drag Goffin towards the net but he slaps an eighth successive point through his defences to break Norrie’s serve...

New balls please!

Goffin 6-3 2-3 Norrie*

16:52 , Marc Mayo

A double fault is followed up by more wayward efforts from Norrie and he finds himself 40-0 down.

A pair of fiery serves earn weak ripostes from Goffin to claw back two break points before Norrie maneuvers his opponent around the baseline nicely to bring it back to deuce.

The Brit loses out on a monster 28-shot rally as Goffin calmly and gradually draws closer and closer to the net. Goffin’s shot spins the wrong side of the line off the top of the net though and Norrie secures a tough but vital hold.

Goffin* 6-3 2-2 Norrie

16:45 , Marc Mayo

A rare exhibition of net play has Goffin scrambling yet Norrie prevails to again win the first point of the Belgian’s service.

Goffin hits back with three-straight points before again losing out at the net. A fine forehand is slapped back across the court to send Norrie the wrong way and claim the game.

Goffin 6-3 1-2 Norrie*

16:39 , Marc Mayo

A beauty of a lob from Norrie gets his first attempt at a break in this set underway nicely but Goffin takes back control to see out the game.

In response, Norrie secures a more comfortable game than earlier.

Goffin 6-3 0-1 Norrie*

16:35 , Marc Mayo

Serving to start the second set, Norrie falls behind 30-15 with a wayward backhand but fights back by forcing his opponent back and forth across the baseline.

Wrestling back the advantage, he falls to deuce as a low-bouncing forehand skittles in to catch him out.

Norrie replies with an ace and yet Goffin is given a break point with a pair of vastly-overhit attempts that already had him beat.

No matter, Goffin loses two tight out calls and fails to challenge the second, when it would have gone this way, and Norrie holds.

First set! Goffin 6-3 Norrie

16:25 , Marc Mayo

Pinpoint precision from Goffin as he earns his first set point of the match and takes the set inside 33 minutes with a loose forehand from Norrie.

A proper test for the British No1, this.

 (PA)
(PA)

Goffin 5-3 Norrie*

16:22 , Marc Mayo

A seriously good forehand from Goffin beats Norrie down his left-hand side when the Brit appeared to be well-positioned.

But a bit of a rally from the home crowd emerges after an overhit shot by the Belgian, and Norrie threatens to go up through the gears by dragging Goffin out wide before cushioning in a finish from the net.

A bit of good old-fashioned brute force closes out the game. Now, time to break...

Goffin* 5-2 Norrie

16:18 , Marc Mayo

Smooth and sleek from Goffin in this first set and Norrie has to break soon to avoid falling behind on Court No1.

Break! Goffin 4-2 Norrie*

16:15 , Marc Mayo

Norrie successfully challenges an out call on his opponent’s baseline before drawing another loose cannon off Goffin.

A narrow out call then goes against the Brit and his service game goes to deuce with a wayward forehand landing comfortably wide.

Goffin has the break point as a shot pings right off the centre of the top of the net, and lands the wrong side for Norrie. The next point sees the Belgian make his own correct challenge call - and he has the first break of the match!

Goffin* 3-2 Norrie

16:08 , Marc Mayo

Regulation hold for Norrie before Goffin shows his accuracy from the baseline to dictate the rallies on his serve.

Technically superb from the more experienced of the two quarter-finalists.

Goffin* 2-1 Norrie

16:02 , Marc Mayo

A couple of misplaced forehands drop Norrie back before a wild shot from Goffin creaks open the door for a potential break, and Norrie takes it to deuce with a fine shot out of reach down the Belgian’s right.

Goffin survives to hold serve.

Goffin 1-1 Norrie*

15:57 , Marc Mayo

Norrie has Goffin darting all over the place to win the second point before mixing in a delicate drop-shot to go 40-0. A fierce backhand across the court seals his first game of the match.

Goffin* 1-0 Norrie

15:55 , Marc Mayo

A set of baseline rallies set the tone for this match as Goffin and Norrie begin to try and outlast the other - a battle Norrie will be plenty happy with.

Goffin holds the opening game of the match.

She can! Neimeier sticks a backhand straight into the net and Maria’s remarkable story continues!

15:22 , Marc Mayo

A break point for Neimeier at the death goes begging almost immediately and a stunning rally at the net featuring lobs and cat-like reflexes of all manner ends in Neimeier tumbling in defence of a delicate cut back across the net by Maria.

That 13-stroke rally wrestles back the advantage for Maria, who wins the game and goes 6-5 up in the decider...

There looks set to be plentyof overlap between the two men’s quarter-finals today as we await new balls on Court No1.

The making of Cameron Norrie

14:33 , Jonathan Gorrie

LTA staff still talk of the thin, slightly spotty 16-year-old who first walked through the doors of the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton after an 11,000-mile trip to relocate from New Zealand.

Somewhat uncertain of what pathway to take, a decade on and five miles down the road, it has brought Cameron Norrie to within touching distance of a first Grand Slam semi-final.

From starting playing with a sawn-off squash racket to using the Covid lockdown to work on his fitness with daily 10 kilometre runs for two months, it is, says former British No1 Greg Rusedski, “an amazing story”.

Rusedski recalls the Norrie of 10 years ago having switched allegiance from New Zealand before relocating to Texas Christian University to study sociology rather than turn professional.

Cameron Norrie-mania

14:19 , Jonathan Gorrie

He’s in the final eight, the last Brit standing and he’s a Londoner (well, sort of).

Cameron Norrie, 26, is Britain’s hope for a Wimbledon win this year after an impressive victory on Sunday against 30th seed Tommy Paul, whom he beat in straight sets.

South African born Norrie, who now lives in Putney, is the first British man to reach the singles quarter-finals since Andy Murray in 2017 and first British player since Johanna Konta in 2019. And the good news is, he’s feeling confident despite never having got this far in a tournament before. “A lot of the top players get better as the tournament progresses,” he said. “I feel like that with myself, for sure. I’m improving and my level is getting better. I’m definitely a little bit more calm in the bigger matches. It’s nice to do it that way round.”
