Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: Cameron Norrie vs Pablo Andujar latest score, updates as British number one eases through

Wimbledon 2022- LIVE!

Cameron Norrie eased past Pablo Andujar to book his place in the second round at Wimbledon.

The biggest danger to British number one proved to be the rain, as play was twice halted including moments after Norrie was unable to take the third match point that came his way deep in the third set.

He returned to swiftly get the job done though with a 6-0 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 victory, more than five hours after the pair first took to court in the morning. The ninth seed will face another Spaniard, Jaume Munar, in his next match.

Norrie has never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam before but will be desperate to improve that record, coming into the tournament as ninth seed. Much of the attention has been on Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu but he could prove to be the best hope for home fans wanting to see a deep run from a British player.

Game, set, match: Norrie 6-0 7-6 6-3 Andujar

16:09 , Matt Verri

Lovely forehand down the line from Andujar, but his second serve lets him down again. Deuce for a seventh time in the game.

Make that eight, as Norrie sends Andujar scampering out wide and he can’t keep the forehand in.

Norrie comes forward and hammers a backhand winner to bring up a fourth match point.

WHICH HE TAKES! Forehand winner seals a 6-0 7-6 6-3 win for the British number one.

16:05 , Matt Verri

Right then, here we go for a third time.

Andujar to serve, Norrie potentially just two points away from the second round.

16:00 , Matt Verri

Norrie and Andujar are back out, met with glorious sunshine!

Spaniard will be hoping to extend this match and make it worth the walk over...

Reminder of the score: Norrie 6-0 7-6 5-3 up. Andujar serving with the game at deuce.

15:54 , Matt Verri

Blues skies above Court 2, umpire is back out.

Players will be shortly following behind, almost five hours after they first came out on court.

Ball boys and ball girls currently lining up outside once again, before they split off and make their way to the various outside courts.

15:46 , Matt Verri

Covers are off on Court 2, something approaching the sun is out. No sign of any grey clouds, which is the main thing.

Shouldn’t be too much longer now - net is being put back up which we can take as a positive sign!

15:40 , Matt Verri

Norrie will be thinking about those three match points that came and went.

British number one would have loved to have wrapped things up before the rain brought a halt to proceedings. Potentially has to come back, after a warm-up, for just two points.

It’s brightening up at Wimbledon, rain hardly falling at all now.

No play before 3:45pm, but hopefully won’t be too much longer after that.

Wasn’t in the job description...

15:18 , Matt Verri

Could do with that roof on Court 2!

15:08 , Matt Verri

No play on the outside courts before 3:30pm. It’s going to be a fair bit longer than that too, the rain is pouring down in SW19.

14:54 , Matt Verri

Play stopped across all the outside courts, but it continues on Centre Court.

Novak Djokovic has just lost the second set, with Soonwoo Kwon levelling things up. Not many saw that coming!

Play suspended!

14:48 , Matt Verri

Norrie will get a third chance! Andujar to the net, pass from Norrie is good enough and the Spaniard can’t get it back.

He’s framed the forehand though, long once more. A fifth deuce. Make that a sixth deuce.

And now the rain begins to fall! Play suspended on Court 2 - Norrie will have to wait.

14:45 , Matt Verri

Spaniard is moving to the net at every opportunity, it works this time as he moves 30-0 up.

More unforced errors though, 30-30 and Norrie is suddenly just two games away from the second round.

Norrie sends a forehand of his own long, before Andujar throws in another double fault. Deuce.

Wide from Andujar, brings up a match point for Norrie. Can’t take it! Room was there for a backhand pass down the line, but it’s wide. Back to deuce.

Match point number two, as Andujar finds the net again. Long from Norrie though, another chance goes.

Deuce for a third time!

Norrie 6-0 7-6 5-3* Andujar

14:39 , Matt Verri

Andujar adds another unforced error off the forehand to add to the collection, as Norrie rushes through the service game.

Brief concern as he slips on the baseline though, as he tried to push off to chasew down a drop shot. No harm done though.

Norrie then perfectly finds the line, Andujar can’t keep the forehand in play and that’s a hold. Norrie one game away.

Norrie 6-0 7-6 *4-3 Andujar

14:35 , Matt Verri

Norrie’s turn to misfire with the forehand, before Andujar’s latest visit to the net proves a success.

The Brit scurries to try and produce a forehand pass but the volley is too good. Spaniard holds.

Norrie 6-0 7-6 4-2* Andujar

14:33 , Matt Verri

The Andujar forehand is not delivering for him - again he shanks one well long.

Norrie can’t find the pass as Andujar moves forward though, 30-30. And now a break point for the Spaniard, this is his chance!

Superb from Norrie. Fires a big first-serve in and Andujar can’t return it. Deuce.

Lovely crosscourt forehand from Norrie, before Andujar comes to the net again and can’t find the volley winner. Norrie holds.

Norrie 6-0 7-6 *3-2 Andujar

14:27 , Matt Verri

Double fault to start the game from Andujar, but a nice drop shot shortens the point and he has an empty court to find after Norrie charges after it.

In the end it’s a relatively comfortable hold for Andujar and that’s at least stopped the rot.

Norrie 6-0 7-6 3-1* Andujar

14:24 , Matt Verri

This could be over very quickly.

Unforced errors from Andujar, ace from Norrie and that’s a hold to love.

Spaniard struggling to win a point at the moment, let along a game.

Norrie 6-0 7-6 *2-1 Andujar

14:21 , Matt Verri

Danger for Andujar - Norrie runs down a drop shot and flicks it perfectly past Andujar. 0-30.

Make that 0-40 and three break points for the Brit. This could pretty much be the match.

Disastrous from Andujar, double fault and it’s a break to love for Norrie. Well on his way, to say the least.

Norrie 6-0 7-6 1-1* Andujar

14:18 , Matt Verri

Andujar has played well in spells but there’s been too many unforced errors, particularly on the forehand.

He looks to be in control of the rally as he comes to the net, but the Spaniard then sends a simple volley well long.

And that’s a hold to love for Norrie.

Norrie 6-0 7-6 *0-1 Andujar

14:16 , Matt Verri

What does Andujar have left after falling short in a tight second set?

A comfortable hold, potentially, as he moves 40-0. Net cord works in Norrie’s favour as the ball bounces up for him and he puts the forehand away.

Brit nets a second-serve return though and the Spaniard is up and running in the third set.

Norrie 6-0 7-6 Andujar

14:11 , Matt Verri

It’s another wild forehand from Andujar, who trails 5-2 and Norrie is within touching distance of the second set.

There’s one of the mini-breaks back - just the one though as Andujar can’t make the forehand pass. 6-3 Norrie and he has three set points.

He needs just once! Unforced error from the Spaniard flies miles long and Norrie is two sets up on Court 2.

14:08 , Matt Verri

Forehand sits up for Andujar to put away and he duly does. That’s long though and Norrie leads 2-1 with a mini-break.

Spaniard nets a backhand and then fires a forehand long... or does he? Challenged and it’s just in once again! They’ll replay the point, which has infuriated Andujar.

Norrie sends a slice long, but he still leads 4-2 at the changeover.

Norrie 6-0 6-6 Andujar

14:03 , Matt Verri

Brilliant from Norrie! Gets to the drop shot, then somehow covers the ground to cover off the pass and maks the volley.

Doesn’t make a difference in the end though, solid serving from Andujar and we’re going to a tie-break in the second set.

Norrie 6-0 6-5* Andujar

13:59 , Matt Verri

Norrie forehands drops long and that’s 30-30. Bit of pressure on the Brit’s serve now for the first time in a while.

First serve at just the right time, not returned. 40-30. Andujar then finds the net, Norrie holds.

Can the Spaniard now take it to a tie-break?

Norrie 6-0 *5-5 Andujar

13:55 , Matt Verri

Andujar thinks the forehand has dropped in - he’s wrong. Just long. 15-15.

Spaniard holds his nerve though and races through the rest of the game to level things up in the second set.

Norrie 6-0 5-4* Andujar

13:51 , Matt Verri

Norrie’s service games are proving to be so much more comfortable than Andujar’s.

Serve out wide, backhand winner makes it 40-15 and the Spaniard then produces another unforced error to secure the hold for Norrie.

Andujar will serve to stay in the second set.

Norrie 6-0 *4-4 Andujar

13:49 , Matt Verri

Couple of free points on serve for Andujar, very welcome at this stage of the set.

A lovely forehand down the line from the Spaniard and he then wraps up the game after an exchange at the net.

Very competitive set on the whole, far cry from the opener.

Norrie 6-0 4-3* Andujar

13:45 , Matt Verri

The frame of Andujar’s racket is going to be worn out, he’s send another forehand high and wide.

Sliced backhand into the net gives Norrie a game point, which he takes with a big first serve.

Norrie 6-0 *3-3 Andujar

13:42 , Matt Verri

During the change of ends Andujar was still moaning to the umpire about that replayed point. Needs to let it go.

He’s in a bit of trouble here at 15-30, as he scrambles to reach a Norrie drop shot but flicks it wide.

Two poor forehands from Norrie help him out of trouble, but Andujar then shanks one of his own and it’s deuce.

Serve and volley from the Spaniard, successful one at that too, and he then seals the hold.

Norrie 6-0 3-2* Andujar

13:37 , Matt Verri

Andujar has been keen to try and shorten the points, he does so again by coming to the net. Unfortunately for him it’s shortened by Norrie finding the backhand pass.

Forehand looped long this time though by the Brit, 30-30.

That looks long from Andujar, who has challenge. It’s in by about a millimeter! Spaniard less than impressed that they’re replaying the point and his mood isn’t helped by a Norrie ace.

Unforced error from Andujar and that’s a hold for Norrie, who leads in the second set for the first time.

Norrie 6-0 *2-2 Andujar

13:32 , Matt Verri

Norrie getting brilliant depth on his returns, sets up a whipped forehand down the line. That’s even better though from Andujar, steps on a backhand and Norrie barely moves. 15-15.

This is turning into an exhibition of a game - a Norrie winners is followed by Andujar perfectly finding the line himself.

Another sensational point! Norrie reads the drop shot, slices it back but Andujar then produces a lovely lob which the Brit can’t get back in play. 40-30. Follows it with a double fault though, deuce.

Norrie earns a break point and will have a second serve to attack. Which he takes! Another drop shot, another lob, this time Norrie can put away the smash. Back on serve.

Norrie 6-0 1-2* Andujar

13:26 , Matt Verri

Anything you can do...

Norrie responds with a hold to love of his own in a matter of seconds, bit of a serving clinic there from the Brit.

Norrie 6-0 *0-2 Andujar

13:24 , Matt Verri

Norrie looks to jump on a second serve, couple of inches from being perfect but it lands just long.

Lovely forehand from Andujar, follow by a shanked Norrie backhand and that’s a hold to love for the Spaniard.

Ideal opening game after the restart for him.

13:21 , Matt Verri

Andujar to serve, leading 1-0 in the second set after he was brushed aside 6-0 in the opener.

At long last play has resumed on Court 2!

13:17 , Matt Verri

Here they are!

The pair are out on Court 2. Norrie will be hoping for more of the same, after he breezed through the opening set this morning.

Quick warm-up and they’ll be up and running again.

13:10 , Matt Verri

Players are back out on a number of Wimbledon’s outside courts - no sign of Norrie and Andujar yet.

Can only assume they are taking a slow stroll over...

12:58 , Matt Verri

Covers are off, umpire is out...

Just need the players now! Play back underway on Court 2 very shortly.

Not something you want to see...

No play before 1pm

12:25 , Matt Verri

Play won’t get underway for another 35 minutes or so at least.

Reminder that Norrie cruised to the first set 6-0, but was broken in the opening game of the second before the rain started to fall.

Rain update

12:13 , Matt Verri

No play before 12:30pm on the outside courts.

Rain appears to be easing and the skies brightening up slightly. Hopefully be back underway soon!

12:08 , Matt Verri

Still the rain falls at SW19.

Not quite what fans had planned for the opening day of play! Won’t impact the likes of Djokovic, Raducanu and Murray though on Centre Court.

The defending champion Djokovic is first up at 1:30pm.

Elsewhere at Wimbledon

11:56 , Matt Verri

Brit Jodie Burrage is 5-2 down in her opening set against Lesia Tsurenko, who will serve for it when they get back on Court 18.

Third seed Casper Ruud is on serve against Albert Ramos-Vinolas, as is Hubert Hurkacz who is playing Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Tommy Paul has taken the first set 6-1 against Fernando Verdasco.

Play suspended!

11:48 , Matt Verri

Rain falling heavily now and play at Wimbledon has been brought to a swift halt on the opening day.

Norrie 6-0 0-1* Andujar

11:40 , Matt Verri

Positive start to the second set for the Spaniard - 15-30 and the best chance he’s had on the Norrie serve.

An ace from the Brit eases some of the pressure, but he then nets the backhand and it’s a break point for Andujar.

TAKEN! Lovely passing shot lands just inside the line and Andujar is on the board!

11:37 , Matt Verri

Drops of rain starting to fall at Wimbledon, as Norrie gets ready to serve at the start of the second set.

Andujar will take anything to try and slow things down here!

Norrie 6-0 Andujar

11:35 , Matt Verri

So then, can the Spaniard avoid a first set bagel? Not a great start - produces his second double fault of the match.

Norrie backhand drops on the line, skids on and Andujar can only find the net. 15-30. Big return from Norrie and in no time at all he has two set points.

Nearly! Andujar goes for the serve and volley, Norrie goes for the crosscourt pass which just hits the top of the net. Spaniard then puts away a smash to take it to deuce.

Another double fault from Andujar, the challenge doesn’t save him. Third set point for Norrie.

And he takes this one! That is a sensational first set from the British number one, wrapped up in 23 minutes.

Norrie 5-0* Andujar

11:30 , Matt Verri

Better from Andujar, backhand down the line and Norrie can’t get there. 30-15.

Any hopes of the Spaniard had of putting some pressure on are quickly put to bed though. Backhand crosscourt finds the line and an ace seals another comfortable holds.

18 minutes in and Andujar will serve to stay in the set.

Norrie *4-0 Andujar

11:28 , Matt Verri

Big game for Andujar, needs to stop this running away from him.

Norrie’s giving him absolutely nothing though, another lovely winner puts the pressure on at 30-30. Andujar then finds the net and it’s another break point for the Brit.

Drop shot is ready by Norrie, who then frames a volley at the net and it drops perfectly over the line. Hands up in apology but that won’t make Andujar feel better. He’s a double break down already.

Norrie 3-0* Andujar

11:24 , Matt Verri

This is a really confident display in the opening stages from Norrie. Two consecutive points won with big forehands and he’s 40-0 up in a matter of seconds.

Backhand down the line, drops just inside the line and it’s a hold to love for the Brit.

Norrie *2-0 Andujar

11:21 , Matt Verri

Twice Andujar has framed a backhand perfectly onto the line - nothing fortunate about a big forehand down the line though to move 30-0 up.

First double fault of the match followed by an unforced error from the Spaniard and it’s deuce.

And that’s long from Andujar, Norrie has a break point. Second serve to attack too. Norrie dominates the rally, forces another error and it’s an early break for the Brit! Perfect start.

Norrie 1-0* Andujar

11:15 , Matt Verri

Confident start from Andujar. First really rally of the match sees the Spaniard work Norrie around the court, Brit can only find the net. 30-30.

Nice drop shot sets up a comfortable smash for Norrie, before he seals an opening hold of serve as Andujar hammers a forehand off the second serve into the net.

11:12 , Matt Verri

Warm-ups done - hopefully Norrie has got all the bad smashes out of his system.

Brit will be serving first.

11:06 , Matt Verri

Players are out on court, very nearly time to get Wimbledon 2022 up and running!

11:02 , Matt Verri

Court 2 filling up nicely ahead of the British number one getting his campaign underway.

Will be a defining day for hopes of a deep run from a British singles player, with Raducanu and Murray to come later.

10:52 , Matt Verri

Bit of cloud of the grey variety over Wimbledon this morning.

Assuming it stays away, players should be out on Court 2 in the next ten minutes or so.

Elsewhere on Day 1

10:46 , Matt Verri

Later this afternoon, Novak Djokovic is first on Centre Court, before Emma Raducanu and then Andy Murray get their Wimbledon campaigns underway.

Jodie Burrage, Heather Watson and Ryan Peniston are among the other British hopes in action on Day 1.

Lots to look forward to!

10:38 , Matt Verri

Norrie’s best Wimbledon performance came a year ago, when he reached the third round.

Roger Federer brought an end to his run on Centre Court, as the Brit was beaten in four sets.

Since then Norrie has gone from strength to strength. He’s the ninth seed this year and although Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray take much of the attention, there’s a strong chance he could be the last Brit standing in the singles draws.

Short of matches on grass

10:31 , Matt Verri

It’s not been the greatest preparation for Norrie heading into Wimbledon.

He was beaten in the first round at Queen’s, by Grigor Dimitrov, before winning only one match at Eastbourne when top seed.

Andujar has only ever won three main-draw matches at Wimbledon though, in eight appearances.

Norrie not looking down the line

10:23 , Matt Verri

Cam Norrie is not looking too far ahead when it comes to the Wimbledon draw, as he looks to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

“Obviously Andujar, I would say grass is not his favorite surface, but I think he’s made third round a couple times,” Norrie said.

“He returns very well. He can definitely play well on the surface. But I look at the first couple matches. I mean, there’s no point for me looking too far down the line. There’s so many matchups that could happen.

“You don’t even know who is going to come through the section. I look at my section, I’m not planning my way all the way to the final. Maybe the first couple matches. Try to take it match by match.”

Prediction

10:02 , Alex Young

Norrie can be forgiven for feeling somewhat overlooked amid all the inevitable focus on Raducanu and Murray.

2022 has brought some notable highs for the Johannesburg-born British No1, but he will be desperate to reach the fourth round of a major for the very first time.

Flying under the radar might work to his advantage, allowing him to go about his business quietly and without the glaring attention and expectations of the partisan home crowds.

Andujar is no pushover, but at 36 his best playing days are certainly behind him and Norrie shouldn’t have too many issues in moving into round two.
