NEW YORK — Marcus Stroman was unhappy that the New York Mets began Sunday’s game against the Miami Marlins in a steady rain, and he lasted just nine pitches before play was stopped. Play began at 1:10 p.m. and was halted by plate umpire D.J. Reyburn after seven minutes. The game was suspended after a wait of 2 hours, 10 minutes and will be continued as part of a day-night doubleheader on Aug. 31. Home teams decide whether to start games. Once a game has begun, umpires decide whether to stop play because of bad weather. Stroman tweeted during the rain delay to express his displeasure. “This game should have never been started. Not smart at all,” Stroman tweeted. “Those conditions put everyone at risk. Beyond happy no players on either side were injured. Hate that I have to wait another 5 days to pitch again. That’s a miserable feeling.” While Mets manager Luis Rojas started Stroman, Miami manager Don Mattingly opted to use reliever John Curtiss as an opener. Curtiss never reached the mound. “We don’t know quite where we’re going to end up with this weather. They’ve opened the gate, so they obviously are going to try to play,” Mattingly said about 1 hour, 20 minutes before the start. “But the weather is still kind of up in the air so, yeah, I just felt like it (using a reliever) was the safest way for us to go.” Just two players batted. Corey Dickerson singled and Starling Marte flied out. Stroman worked deliberately in the rain, throwing out wet balls, and he twice forced Reyburn to get new sets of baseballs. There were about 1,000 fans in the seats when the game began, and by the time Jesús Aguilar walked up to the batter’s box, the infield dirt was shiny and slick from water. The game was stopped after a pair of splitters in the dirt left a 2-0 count on Aguilar. MOVING DOWN Michael Conforto was dropped from third to sixth in the batting order by manager Luis Rojas. Entering his last season before becoming eligible for free agency, Conforto is off to a 3 for 21 (.143) start with no homers and three RBIs. MARLINS MOVES LHP Daniel Castano was recalled from the alternate training site, and OF Lewis Brinson was optioned there. TRAINER’S ROOM Marlins: C Jorge Alfaro (left hamstring) has not played since Tuesday and Miami hopes he can play Monday. Mets: 1B J.D. Davis (bruised left hand from hit by pitch Tuesday) still has discomfort while swinging. UP NEXT Marlins: RHP Sandy Alcantara (0-1) opens a series at Atlanta, which starts RHP Huascar Ynoa (0-0). Mets: LHP David Peterson (0-1) starts for the Mets in a series opener against Philadelphia and RHP Chase Anderson (0-1). ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Ronald Blum, The Associated Press

DUNEDIN, Fla. — The game between the Los Angeles Angels and Toronto scheduled for Sunday at the Blue Jays' temporary home in Florida was postponed because of rain. The game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Aug. 10 at Anaheim, California. This game at the Blue Jays' spring training site never started and was called after a two-hour wait. The rainout followed the Blue Jays’ 15-1 win over the Angels on Saturday night that ended after 1 a.m. It was delayed 2 hours, 38 minutes, by rain at the start and featured a strong storm that produced wind gusts of 40 to 45 mph. The game lasted 3:21 and ended 12 hours before Sunday’s scheduled first pitch. Rain started around two hours before the 1:07 EDT start time. The inclement weather included an intense thunderstorm that engulfed TD Ballpark in heavy rain, frequent lightning and wind gusts that reached 50 mph. The radar at the time of the postponement showed additional bad weather extending well into the nearby Gulf of Mexico. Due to COVID-19 protocols in Canada, the Blue Jays are playing their first three homestands through May at their spring training facility. TRAINER’S ROOM Angels: OF Dexter Fowler has a torn ACL in his left knee that requires season-ending surgery. Fowler was hurt when he took an awkward step on second base in Friday night’s game. … 3B Anthony Rendon was out of the original startin lineup. Manager Joe Maddon said Rendon felt something in groin making a throw Saturday night. UP NEXT Angels: Play at Kansas City on Monday night. Blue Jays: Will face Yankees ace RHP Gerrit Cole (1-0) Monday night in the opener of a three-game series. __ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports The Associated Press

A unique COVID-19 testing site took place in Halifax over the weekend with the regular swabs and materials — plus interpretive services for more than 200 languages. The first asymptomatic testing event for newcomers to Canada took place Saturday and Sunday at the YMCA Centre for Immigrant Programs on Bayers Road. The event was hosted by Nova Scotia Health and the province alongside groups like the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia, YMCA and Halifax Refugee Clinic. Margaret Angus, a spokesperson for Nova Scotia's health authority, said there was a push to get more participants on Sunday after organizers saw fewer people than they hoped to see on Saturday. "The real focus of this one was less on numbers and more on creating a really positive experience for the people who do show up because the intent is to have more of these in future," Angus said Sunday. "We figure if word of mouth gets around that it's a pretty decent experience, then more folks will come out next time as well." The event was initially suggested by their partners and newcomer communities, Angus said. Angus said the testing site was being run by Praxes Medical Group. Just like in other asymptomatic sites, testing was free and those coming in did not need a health card to be tested, but could not have any symptoms of the virus. There were interpreters on hand for a variety of languages, Angus said, as well as volunteers from newcomer organizations to make the experience as comfortable as possible. Angus was unsure what type of interpreters were there in person, but everyone would have had access to the immediate LanguageLine phone interpretation service that carries 240 languages. "We would have been able to respond in whatever language people arrived needing," Angus said. The event began Saturday afternoon and ran until Sunday afternoon. No dates have been set for the next newcomer testing events. Angus said the next step is to review the pilot event to determine what can be improved. MORE TOP STORIES
