Semiconductor firm Melexis forecasts lower sales, margin for 1st half of 2025
(Reuters) -Melexis, Belgium's largest semiconductor supplier, said on Wednesday that it expected lower margin and sales in the first half of 2025, as inventory corrections by its automotive customers continue into the new year. Melexis, whose automotive semiconductor business made up 90% of its total sales in 2024, counts Tesla and Chinese carmakers BYD and NIO among its customers. The company expects its operating margin to reach around 16% in the first half of the year, down from the 26.3% it posted in the same period in 2024.

Santander announces 10 billion euros in buybacks after record profits
MADRID (Reuters) -Santander said on Wednesday it expects to return 10 billion euros ($10.39 billion) to investors through share buybacks from 2025 and 2026 earnings and anticipated excess capital, after the Spanish lender reported record profits. The bank's fourth-quarter net profit rose 11% year-on-year after a solid performance at its retail businesses in Spain and Brazil and higher revenues more than offset a decline in consumer lending, it said on Wednesday. Santander, like other lenders, has benefited from higher interest rates, but growth in its key Latin American markets has given it an edge over more Europe-dependent rivals that have scaled back their presence in the Americas.

China to control micro drama distribution in tighter regulation push
China will mandate a licensing requirement for broadcasting micro dramas, enabling it to foster their "healthy and prosperous development", authorities said, in a move that will enable tighter control on what content gets published online. The move comes as a boom in micro dramas in China has brought scrutiny from the Communist Party. Micro dramas, vertically shot, minute-long episodes featuring frequent plot turns designed to keep millions of viewers hooked to their cellphone screens - and paying for more - have mushroomed in popularity in China in recent years.

Iran says its foreign policy driven by interests after Trump voices readiness to talk
Iran's foreign policy is driven by dignity, wisdom and interest, a government spokesperson said on Wednesday, in response to U.S. President Donald Trump saying that Washington was ready to reach out to Tehran. "Our foreign policy has always been driven by the following principles: dignity for our country and people, wisdom [...]and interest," Fatemeh Mohajerani said during a press conference, when asked to react to Trump's willingness to hold talks with his Iranian counterpart. On Tuesday, Trump restored his "maximum pressure" campaign on Iran that included efforts to drive its oil exports down to zero in order to stop Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
