Puerto Rico swears in new governor days after major blackout hit island
Jenniffer González Colón was sworn in Thursday as Puerto Rico’s new governor as the island prepared for a normally ebullient ceremony overshadowed by widespread anger over a blackout that hit the U.S. territory days ago. González, a Republican who backs President-elect Donald Trump and whose pro-statehood New Progressive Party secured a historic third consecutive term after she won the Nov. 5 election, has pledged to stabilize the Caribbean island’s crumbling power grid. Before the start of a ceremony in front of Puerto Rico's seaside Capitol to celebrate her swearing in, González attended Mass surrounded by family and supporters.

Sterling falls to nine-month low as dollar carries on climbing
Trump's policies are widely expected to not only boost growth but also add to upward price pressure. Sticky inflation and better growth early in the year meant the Bank of England was more cautious about cutting rates than its peers. "If we were to see the economy in the UK continue to weaken early this year, and the Bank of England started to make noises about potentially being more active in terms of cutting rates in response to that, that could certainly open the door for a weaker pound," he said.

Indonesia court says vote threshold for presidential candidates not legally binding
JAKARTA (Reuters) -Indonesia's Constitutional Court on Thursday said a law requiring a minimum number of votes for political parties to nominate a presidential candidate was not legally binding, which could allow a wider range of candidates in 2029. Under the current law, parties must win 20% of the vote, whether individually or through a coalition, at a legislative election to put forward a presidential candidate. Chief Justice Suhartoyo granted the petition, saying the threshold "had no binding legal power", but the court ruling did not specify if the requirement should be abolished or lowered.

A crystal ball gazer's guide to rugby in 2025...
A Six Nations where Scotland might finally do something, a women's World Cup with the improving Scots daring to dream of a strong tournament, a Lions tour that might feature a record number of Scots. Professional rugby is such unpredictable terrain that only the terminally unwise would dare predict things. Given that Italy beat Scotland in Rome last season this is no gimme, but Gregor Townsend's team will start with a win, however tight.
