Alec Trujillo saved the best for last in his Fresno City College debut.

Trujillo threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to former Buchanan High standout Josiah Ayon in the end zone in double coverage with nine seconds remaining to give the Rams a 19-13 victory over Diablo Valley in the JUCO season opener for both teams on Friday night in Pleasant Hill.

Ayon was mobbed by his teammates after the touchdown. The Rams rejoiced after trying to find a rhythm.

Trujillo was grateful his team came away with the win.

“I was happy that we won,” the former San Joaquin Memorial standout said. “That’s the whole goal. I told them this is the way to keep fighting and I told the defense great job. They kept us in that game.”

It was Trujillo’s first game since playing just one game for Iowa Central in the 2021 season.

“He made some mistakes early that he would admit to,” Rams coach Tony Caviglia said. “He stayed positive and kept going and made the plays at the end when we had to.”

Trujillo called it a “blessing” to play again after he waited for the right opportunity.

It finally came for him.

“It felt really good just to be able to play again,” he said. “A lot of people take this game for granted.”
