A hardcore Land Rover Defender 90 prototype with a cage and widebody fenders was spotted trundling around roads adjacent to the Nürburgring on Friday.

The unnamed Defender trim, which spy YouTuber Automotive Mike has dubbed the Defender SVX, was dressed in full camouflage to hide its fascia and upgraded bodywork as it drove past the camera multiple times on a rainy Friday.

The car shown here signals Land Rover's plan to offer an even more capable trim of its hugely popular retro SUV. While there's no telling what sort of powertrain lies under the skin, we're guessing there's some sort of V-8, judging by the sound. It's unclear if it's packing the current truck's supercharged 5.0 or a powerplant from another source.

While we don't get any high-speed action shot from the side of the Nordschleife, the widened tires, roll cage, and racing buckets seen inside the cabin are more than enough to suggest its sporting intentions. We'll just have to wait and see what Land Rover has in store.
