Why the knee-high stomper boot will be everywhere this autumn

What’s tall, dark and handsome with a chunky bottom…? Why, the standout boot of the season.

The freakishly warm October weather appears to be waning, which means it’s time to whip out the autumnal layers and rain-ready footwear. If there’s one boot style that’s set to rule them all this winter, it’s the knee-high, chunky-soled stomper boot, or knee-high stomper for short. In fact, according to fashion shopping platform Lyst, searches for chunky knee-high boots have increased by 69 per cent since the start of October.

Essentially an elongated version of last winter’s omnipresent ankle-length Bottega-inspired lug-soled boots, the knee-high stomper first trickled onto our Instagram feeds earlier this year as influencers began pairing them with everything from winter leggings and tailored trousers to micro minis and shorts.

While at first glance the boots, almost welly-like in their chunkiness, might seem an intimidating trend to tackle, they are in fact not only wonderfully practical but also surprisingly versatile. I bought a pair two months ago and have found myself wearing them with mini dresses and bare legs in warmer weather, and a mini skirt, tights and chunky knit now its cooler. They also work well with utility style jumpsuits tucked in and even with black skinnies and an oversized blazer.

The best part? Despite being a fairly new trend, the high street has been rapid to catch on. So while there are several wallet shiver-inducingly high end styles on the market (Prada’s Mono riding boots are right up there with the most payday splurge-worthy, and Valentino Garavani’s rose-embossed white rubber boots have been an influencer favourite), there are also plenty of really brilliant affordable options out there.
