The ongoing defamation trial between Johnny Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard is drawing to a close after weeks of testimonies and evidence being shared from both sides – and now, it's said that one of Depp's former partners, model Kate Moss, is expected to be drafted in at the last minute to give evidence via video link. But why?

During one cross-examination at the hands of Depp's legal team, Heard allegedly recalled an incident involving herself, Depp and her sister, Whitney, at the top of a staircase. Heard made the claim that on this occasion, she feared Depp was going to push her sister down the stairs and that she 'swung' at Depp in order to protect her. While making this claim, Heard added that she had heard Depp had previously pushed Moss down a flight of stairs.

On the stand Heard said, "I don't hesitate, don't wait. I just, in my head, instantly think of Kate Moss and stairs, and I swung at him...". To this, Depp's legal team looked visibly excited, as it meant they now had a reason to call Moss in to testify on Depp's behalf (presumably to refute Heard's implication that he was violent towards her and to paint an alternative narrative about the way Depp operates in a relationship).

It's reported, by Vulture and the New York Post, that Moss will appear via video link this Wednesday (25 May).

Moss and Depp dated between 1994 and 1997, when she was 20-years-old and he was 31. Following their split, Moss told Vanity Fair in 2012: "There's nobody that’s ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit. I believed what he said. Like if I said, 'What do I do?', he’d tell me. And that's what I missed when I left. I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying. Oh, the tears!"

In relation to Depp's exes, Heard's team put forward a video testimony from Ellen Barkin, who alleges that she had a sexual relationship with Depp whilst filming Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas together. She claims he once threw a bottle of wine across a hotel room, which did not hit anybody, and that he was a jealous partner who accused her of sleeping with other people.

Another witness lined up to testify for Depp is believed to be Jennifer Howell, Whitney Heard's former boss, with whom she moved in with after a stint of living with Depp and her sister. In Howell's written testimony, she states that Whitney Heard told her that she tried to "Stop her sister Amber from hitting and attacking Johnny on the stairs. Whitney said when she tried to intervene to stop Amber from going after Johnny, Amber nearly pushed Whitney down the stairs".

It is expected that Howell will share similar sentiments during her court appearance also, which Depp's team are likely hoping will undermine both Whitney and Amber Heard's testimonies in relation to the staircase incident.

The trial is anticipated to wrap up on Friday 27 May, with both parties putting forward their closing arguments to the jury.
