Why Kate Middleton Isn't Wearing Her Engagement Ring While Working from Home

  • While practicing social distancing and working from home at Kensington Palace, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was photographed without her iconic engagement ring.

  • The reason she wasn't wearing the sapphire ring, which once belonged to the late Princess Diana, is simply to allow for more effective handwashing amid the coronavirus pandemic.

  • This isn't the first time the duchess has been spotted without her ring.

While dutifully following best practices amid the coronavirus pandemic, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was photographed working from home without her iconic sapphire engagement ring.

In the picture, posted on Kensington Royal's Instagram page on Sunday, the duchess wore a coral suit while sitting at her desk, chatting on the phone with Catherine Roche, the CEO of Place2Be. "Self-isolation and social distancing can pose huge challenges to our mental health," the caption read. "In recent weeks The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been in regular contact with organisations and patronages to understand the issues they are facing during this difficult time."

On her hand, she was still donning her Welsh gold wedding band, but the sapphire, which famously belonged to the late Princess Diana, was noticeably absent. Most likely, the duchess opted out of wearing the sentimental piece of jewelry to allow for more effective handwashing amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Earlier this year, Kate also left her engagement ring at home for health purposes while visiting the Evelina London Children's Hospital. According to People, the facility asks that guests wear minimal jewelry, as they would be thoroughly washing their hands before embarking on tours and entering the treatment centers.

In 2018, the duchess again forwent her engagement gem for the opening of the Great Ormond Street Hospital's Mittal Children's Medical Centre.
