Why India Needs To Start Vaccinating Pregnant Women On Priority

Despite the death of a large number of pregnant women who experienced severe complications due to being infected with COVID-19, the Indian government continues to delay the vaccination of this population. Many other countries including the US, UK, Israel and Belgium have recommended that expectant mothers be encouraged to take the vaccine.

Research conducted in 703 health centres in the US under the INTERCOVID study revealed that women who are diagnosed with the virus during pregnancy are at a higher risk of death. It also showed that they were more likely to experience pregnancy-related complications like premature birth compared to those who were uninfected.
