So *this* is why your hairdresser asks you to look down during a haircut

From the comfy salon chair and warming cup of tea to the incredible post-shampoo head massage and great chat, it can be easy to forget how hard your hairstylist is working during a haircut. Of course, they may ask you to do certain things during said haircut that you’ll comply with absent-mindedly. For example, as somebody with long hair, I’m often asked to stand up.

But one most of us will have experienced at some point is being asked to look down. Of course, I do it while continuing to blabber on about the latest Kardashian/Jenner drama – but have you ever stopped and wondered why they ask you to look down?

Well, I’d never given it a second thought either – until I saw a viral Instagram Reel pop up on my feed. Posted by Shannon Ewing, master stylist at Brooks & Harlow Salon in New York, the video shows a seemingly straight haircut. That is, until the person in the chair tilts their head forward.

When they look down, suddenly the haircut has lots of different lengths to it and is completely uneven. On the video, Shannon wrote: “When your stylist asks you to look down during your haircut… this is why”. She also added in the caption: “The more you know ✨🙌🏻”. Truly.

The video has a staggering 43.7 million views (yes, you read that right) and has been inundated with comments, mainly from fellow hairstylists stating just how important this step is.

One wrote: “This was so helpful!!!”

Another added: “Soooo important!”

One said: “This was one of the first things i was told when i trained nearly 30 yr ago, surprises me when stylists don't do this”.

Some also added that clients (aka us) don’t keep their heads down for long enough:

“Yesssss and 'look down' means UNTIL i tell you to look up. Not down and up to look in the mirror to talk to me. 🙄”

“Some people just think I’m being mean, insisting they “keep your head down, damn it”. 😂”

“I wish I could send this to all my clients that lift their heads 😂”

So let this serve as a gentle reminder to us all: the next time your hairstylist asks you to look down, keep your head down until they tell you to look back up. If you want a straight and even haircut, that is.
