Why former Auburn football quarterback Cam Newton came back to throw at Tuesday's pro day

AUBURN, Ala. — Former Auburn football quarterback Cam Newton was back on campus Tuesday afternoon.

Newton, 33, threw in front of scouts from all 32 NFL teams at Auburn's pro day. His receivers during the performance were Shedrick Jackson, John Samuel Shenker and his younger brother, Caylin.

Caylin, who spent two years with the Tigers before transferring to William & Mary, added some context for his older sibling's return to the Plains.

"Honestly, this was him showing love to me," Caylin said after being asked how important it was for Cam to show his skills in front of NFL personnel. "He doesn't owe anybody anything. He has had an amazing journey, an amazing career in the NFL. He has nothing to prove to anybody.

"This was just to show love to his little brother and to share this moment with me."

Cam, who did not speak to reporters, made the announcement Monday night that he'd be at Auburn's pro day.

"Tell me how these randoms keep getting jobs," he said in a Twitter post. "Don't worry about it. I'm going to show you. I can't wait to show you. I love it. I love it."

He added: "Ain't 32 (other quarterbacks) better than me."

Caylin said Cam did this for him, but also explained his brother is still available if an NFL team is interested.

"He came to show his ability, to show he still has it, but I think for him this was a selfless act," Caylin said. "But to just show and prove to everybody (that) he's just not sitting around, he's still got. Whatever organization that wants to get a winning quarterback, his number is still open and available."

Caylin said he was the one that brought up the idea to Cam: "His reaction was mouth open, shocked."

“I asked him," Caylin explained. "I was like, ‘Man, let’s do something that hasn’t been done before. Let’s do things the right way. Let’s cap off our Auburn journey.’ He graduated from here. I’ve graduated from here. It’s nothing like being back and sharing this moment with him.”
