Why Fast & Furious 8 Won’t Be ‘More Of The Same’

After seven films it’s hard to imagine how the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise will make the upcoming eighth instalment different to its predecessors.

But F. Gary Gray, who has replaced ‘Furious 7’s’ James Wan as director, admitted to Collider that they’re already working on ways to “make sure the audience feels like it’s not more of the same.”

Obviously, the ‘Straight Outta Compton’ director was unable to go into specific details about how ‘Furious 8′ will be different.

But he did cite J.J. Abrams’ work on ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ as an influence, explaining that he wants to expand the scope of the action while also exploring the characters further.

“When you look at someone like J.J. Abrams who gives you the spectacle and great action set pieces but also gives you character and plotting and narrative,” F. Gary Gray explained.

“I think it’s my job – and my intention – to do both. You amp up everything, you work on the performances, you work on the story, you work on the action; it’s not just one thing,” Gray continued. “Hopefully I bring more to it, that’s part of the point is to bring something different to the franchise while still satisfying what the fans want.”

This is actually the second time that F Gary Gray has worked with Vin Diesel as his leading man, as he directed 2003’s ‘A Man Apart’ too.

However, with ‘Furious 7′ currently the sixth highest grossing film of all time, the expectations for ‘Fast & Furious 8′ are much higher than the sub-par action film, and it will be interesting to see how Gray takes to the frenetic franchise.

Production on ‘Fast & Furious 8′ is due to begin later this year, while it will finally hit cinemas on April 14, 2017.
