Why DC Could Beat Marvel At The Box Office This Year

Marvel has been dominating the comic-book genre for quite a few years now. Not only have their films been met with sterling reviews but they repeatedly turn bountiful profits for the studio too.

But they’ve now got some stern competition in the shape of Warner Bros.’ upcoming DC slate, which began with 2013’s ‘Man Of Steel’ and will soon expand thanks to the releases of ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ in March and August, respectively. Meanwhile, Marvel’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’ will hit in May, while it will be followed by ‘Doctor Strange’ in November.

Moviegoers will make up their own minds about which blockbusters they prefer. But whichever studio finishes on top at the box office will immediately start to claim that they’re now the kings of the superhero genre.

And, according to early tracking figures from Variety’s Digital Audience Ratings, it looks as though DC will ultimately come out on top. That’s because the DAR, which analyses the film’s engagement on social media sites, is suggesting that ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ is way out in front when it comes to online chatter.

Their report reads, “Among the slew of comic book films set for release in 2016, including new ‘Captain American’ and ‘X-Men’ adaptations, early social and digital tracking places ‘Suicide Squad’ and ‘Batman v Superman’ 500% stronger than competitors based on standing at the same point pre-release.”

While this news can be twisted and turned to make it seem like Warner Bros. are hot on the heels of Marvel Studios, it also doesn’t really mean anything at this stage.

Especially since DAR doesn’t differentiate between positive and negative feedback, which means that even people who go online and denounce Zack Snyder and everything he stands for are included. Plus, the recent ‘Suicide Squad’ trailer and the impending release of ‘Batman v Superman’ means that there’s been plenty to talk about regarding these movies.

However, Warner Bros. will be ecstatic to see that so many people are talking about their films. And they’ll be hoping that this attention will turn the films into box office bonanzas when ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ is released on March 25 and ‘Suicide Squad’ follows on August 5.
