We’re only a couple of days into the Winter ‘Love Island’ and already it’s whipping the nation into a saucy googling frenzy.

Last year, Curtis broke the Internet after revealing his favoured sexual position was ‘The Eagle’, and last night we were left scratching our heads about Islander, Callum’s sex trick of choice - ‘The Butter Churner’.

As part of the episode’s ‘Spill The Tea’ challenge, it was revealed that the reality TV contestant was partial to a bit of butter churning action in the bedroom.

While many of us were no doubt stumped about what the the lesser-known sex position involves, Callum did go on to give us a brief demonstration, miming out the move with an imaginary partner.

But though we got the gist, there are still questions about what exactly the butter churner actually is?

Thankfully, we’ve consulted the sexperts to give you the complete low down, should you wish to add it to your sex position repertoire.

What actually is the Butter Churner?

“The butter churner is an advanced sex position in which the woman lies on her back with her legs raised above and behind her head,” explains Annabelle Knight, sex and relationship expert at Lovehoney.

“The man then squats and penetrates her from above. The thrusting motion in this position is similar to making butter in an old fashioned butter churner, which is how this position gets its name.”

Knight says the butter churner may also be known as the squat thruster, because the action used is similar to that performed while doing a squat thrust.

Though the position is said to be great for orgasms, it is pretty acrobatic, so it’s one to try if you’re feeling flexible.

And there are a couple of things to watch out for if you do fancy giving it a go.

Firstly, your neck and upper body may be put under a bit of a pressure in this pose, so watch out for cramp and encourage your partner not to thrust to vigorously.

“You do have to be pretty supple to pull off the butter churner position,” Knight explains. “Many of the ‘Love Island’ stars are gym fanatics so I imagine they will have the flexibility to do it without too much difficulty. But be careful if you do not exercise regularly. You can easily pull a muscle by contorting yourself in a way the body isn’t used to.

“Be careful not to strain your neck or back.”

And while the rush of blood to your head can increase the sensations, watch out when you get up as you may feel a bit woozy.

As we also witnessed last year, ‘Love Island’ seems to have quite the influence on couples' sexual behaviour.

“Lots of new sex positions tend to emerge when ‘Love Island’ is on,” Knight explains. “The contestants love to discuss new ways to experiment sexually and that has to be a good thing.

“Most of the positions are quite technical and require a fair bit of athleticism. Give them a try and have fun while you are trying to make them work. And don't worry too much if they don't work for you,” she adds.

Knight has put together some other ‘Love Island’ inspired positions for those keen to broaden their sexual horizons.

The Galley

According to Knight the Galley sex position is a sexy, yet accessible, rear-entry position.

“In this position, the penetrating partner sits with legs extended, allowing the receiving partner to lower themselves down to guide penetration,” she explains.

“As a rear-entry position, the galley is quite comfortable for both partners, but provides a sexy view and plenty of options!”

The Peg

“The Peg sex position is a relatively relaxing position that still allows for deep penetration,” says Knight. “Thanks to the rear entry and bent legs of the partner being penetrated, this position goes deep, but the side positioning means that both partners will have plenty of control over how far they take that.”
