What Does Suicide Squad’s Mid-Credit Scene Mean?

Anyone who’s seen DC’s ‘Suicide Squad’ will be aware of a mid-credit sequence, but what exactly does it reveal and, importantly, mean?

*The following contains huge Suicide Squad spoilers*

So, we’ve seen the ‘skwad’ take down Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) and essentially save the city under the command of Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) and at the order of government agent Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).

But once the dust has quite literally settled and the credits begin to roll, we’re privy to a discussion between Waller and one Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck). Firstly, from the Comic-Con ‘Justice League’ footage and Wayne’s chat with Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ we learn of the intention to form the Justice League - made up of Batman, The Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Wonder Woman, and Aquaman (Jason Momoa).

In the short scene after ‘Suicide Squad’, the pair discuss the fate of Task Force X (that’s the official name for the Suicide Squad members), with Wayne implying he and his people will ‘sort it out’. “If you don’t shut it down, someone will do it for you,” he threatens. This is after she hands over files similar to the ones we see in ‘Dawn of Justice’ that now contain profiles on June Moone (aka Enchantress) as well as Aquaman in exchange for his help to absolve her from taking the heat over what went down in the movie.

It’s strongly implied that Wayne intends to not only fully assemble his Justice League but also plans to track down and eliminate these meta-humans that Waller freed and ‘employed’ in the first place. However, we’ve had ‘Justice League’s’ villain confirmed as Steppenwolf, but the notion of a Justice League v Suicide Squad movie some point in the future is an intriguing prospect.

Yet at this point it appears Bruce hasn’t even fully assembled his team - unless it’s simply a case of locating the enigmatic Aquaman - who will then scour the planet for the likes of Killer Croc, Harley Quinn and even The Joker.

It’s obvious from the sequence that the pair clearly dislike one another, as Waller says: “I don’t believe in friendship. I believe in leverage,” after the files are handed over. This tells us that this is purely a business transaction and as a means to cover her own back; seeking help from someone she neither likes nor respects.

Waller gets the final parting blow when, as Bruce is leaving, she says: “You look tired. You should stop working nights,” which drops the bombshell that she know he’s Batman. Which begs the question: how many other people know? We’ve already seen the likes of Diana, Lex Luthor, and Clark Kent become aware of his identity, so perhaps he’s not as under the radar as he first though.

However this scene builds upon and wherever it leads to, there’s certainly a lot of material for DC to move forward with over the next for or five years.
