We've Been Home With Our Blankets for so Long, of Course Ponchos Are Coming Back

When the Y2K comeback first began, we admittedly cringed at the thought of UGG boots, belly chains, and cargo pants making their way back into our wardrobe. But, eventually, our minds changed. UGGs evolved into a cute and practical model-approved shoe. Belly chains paired well with our swimsuits. And cargo pants? Well, they're the happy medium between sweats and jeans.

But one trend that still kind of makes us shudder? Ponchos. Fringed, knit, Snuggie-like ponchos — which, according to Jennifer Lopez, might be the next throwback trend to return.

While out and about in Spain in early January, the multi-hyphenate was spotted wearing a white, knit, turtleneck version of this old school staple, which she styled with flared jeans and heels. (We promise, the photo isn't actually from 2003.) Immediately, we flashed back to that era, remembering that Lopez was once a big poncho fan, wearing them both on and off the red carpet. Maybe it's the fact that we can hardly picture a poncho without the addition of a newsboy cap and fully sequined bag, but our first thought was "No. Not again!"

But yes, it looks like Lopez really was onto something. After all, the piece was included in Gabriela Hearst's Spring 2022 collection, while a fancy sequined option was spotted at Louis Vuitton. And, you can't really argue that this revival doesn't make absolute sense for 2022.

Think about it: most of us have spent an absurd amount of time at home over the past few years, sitting on the couch in our loungewear. The poncho kind of checks all the boxes — a sweater, an outerwear option, a wearable blanket, which makes getting dressed extremely easy and stress-free.

Technically, ponchos pair well with just about everything we own, from T-shirts (which will be hidden) to leggings (which match the theme of overall ease and comfort). However, if you're tempted to give this divisive article of clothing a chance in the near future, take a look at the poncho outfit ideas ahead for inspiration.

Should you be headed to the office or even a formal event, a wool or nylon version of this layer adds a bit of elegance and won't feel bulky or distracting like a coat would.
