Wedding bells and a new truck are in the plans for SC couple who won lottery jackpot

A Midlands couple is going to get married, and now they’ve got extra money to plan their dream wedding after winning big in the South Carolina Education Lottery.

After buying a lottery ticket, the woman said she was sitting in a car when she scratched off the winning numbers and revealed a $300,000-winning jackpot, lottery officials said in a news release.

When she saw the six-figure payday, she told her boyfriend to take the ticket inside the West Columbia store and have it scanned to be sure, according to the release.

“The store clerk fist bumped him,” she said in the release. “It was amazing. We felt butterflies.”

The couple said they’re going to get married.

Other than planning their wedding, the couple said they will spend the money from the windfall to buy a truck and on home improvements while also saving some for the future.

“We’re going to live happily ever after,” the boyfriend said in the release.

The couple’s names were not released because South Carolina is one of eight states — along with Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

The winning scratch-off game was bought for $10 at the Smart Stop on Platt Springs Road, lottery officials said. That’s at the intersection with Emanuel Church Road in the area between Interstate 20 and Interstate 26.

The gas station/convenience store received a commission of $3,000 for selling the claimed winning ticket, according to the release.

Lottery officials said the odds of winning $300,000 in Instant Jackpot were 1-in-900,000. Two top prizes remains in the game, with four having been claimed, according to lottery officials.
