Watch a woman belly dance at a South Florida airport. And others joined in with hip moves

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport saw some action on Tuesday afternoon — but it didn’t have to do with travelers fighting over masks.

Video posted to FLL’s Twitter account shows three people in Terminal 3 on the lower level. One woman in the front is decked out in a bikini top and long skirt, belly dancing to Middle Eastern music. The women behind her are gamely trying to follow her lead.

Reason? Not to pass time before the flight or work off some calories.

The airport says that guests and employees were engaging in some “hip action” with Amina, a belly dancing teacher for World Diversity Week.

“Amina showed them some signature moves of the Middle Eastern dance of Egyptian origin,” says the caption, which explains all week long the airport will be celebrating the South Florida community’s cultural diversity.

If you’re flying anywhere this week, you’ll note more of the airport’s offerings, including at the food court.

The Broward airport’s weeklong schedule of activities includes live music and dance performances, cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts expo as well as multilingual terminal announcements from employees saluting their countries of origin.

In Terminal 4 on Tuesday, local steel drum band Carlton Lambert played for Spirit Airlines passengers.

On Wednesday, lucky travelers got to see dancers from the International Polka Band do their thing in Terminal 1.

The airport’s World Diversity Week is an expansion of the United Nations’ World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development celebrated annually on May 21.

Coming up Thursday, a mariachi band in Terminal 3 in Departures, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event concludes Friday, with a jazz saxophone performance with Arts & Crafts Expo, Terminal 1, Arrivals, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Let’s hope the calming music kept some hot tempers from flaring and eases the often stressful process of getting from A to B.
