The coming-of-age movie, which arrives on the streaming network on Friday, is about the unlikely friendship between young shapeshifting sea monsters. The story unfolds in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera, and centers around Luca Paguro (Jacob Tremblay) and Alberto Scorfano (Jack Dylan Grazer) as they experience an unforgettable summer packed with all the gelato and pasta they can handle, endless scooter rides, and fun-filled sunny days. But of course, all the fun could expose Luca’s deeply-guarded secret identity.

“Luca” is directed by Academy Award nominee Enrico Casarosa (“La Luna”), and produced by Andrea Warren (“Lava,” “Cars 3”). The cast includes Maya Rudolph, who voices Luca’s mom Daniela, Jim Gaffigan as Luca’s dad Lorenzo, and Sandy Martin as Luca’s grandma. Emma Berman plays Giulia Marcovaldo, Marco Barricelli voices Giulia’s dad Massimo, while Giacomo Gianniotti plays a local fisherman, and Saverio Raimondo voices the town bully, Ercole Visconti.

Besides being a feel-good film, “Luca” makes a great option for a virtual movie night. If you want to watch the film with people outside of your household, Disney+ has GroupWatch, so you can stream with up to six friends at a time (they have to be Disney+ members to participate). And Disney+ will be ramping up its program this summer debuting new shows and movies every week, including the highly-anticipated “Black Widow” film arriving on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 9.

“Luca” is the latest Pixar release to land on Disney+ after “Soul” made its debut last year following delays brought on by the global pandemic. It’s also the shortest Pixar movie since “Toy Story,” as IndieWire’s senior film critic David Ehrlich noted in his review of the film. “Enrico Casarosa’s ‘Luca’ is effectively the Disney+ equivalent (read: non-alcoholic version) of an apiol spritz on a late summer afternoon: sweet, effervescent, and all the more satisfying for its simplicity,” writes Ehrlich. “ At times, ‘Luca’ is so modest, so restrained, so not about sentient action figures or a family of superheroes or the nature of the human soul that it almost doesn’t feel like a Pixar film at all.”
