Watch John Krasinski's Awkward Encounter With Charlie Day in a Clip From 'The Hollars' (Exclusive)

Ah, the run-in with your high-school sweetheart’s spouse. There are few situations more uncomfortable for folks returning to the hometown they’ve long left behind.

It’s a famously awkward moment that John Krasinski captures perfectly in the above exclusive clip from The Hollars, the upcoming comedic drama (or dramatic comedy, take your pick) that the Office alum also directed from a script by Jim Strouse (Grace Is Gone, People Places Things).

John Hollar (Krasinski) is an aspiring graphic artist caught in an uninspiring New York publishing gig who heads back to his small Middle American hometown after his mother (Margo Martindale) falls ill and requires surgery. There, he has to help his struggling father (Richard Jenkins) and loose-cannon brother (Sharlto Copley) also get their lives back on track.

And it’s at the hospital where Sally is being treated that John meets Jason (Charlie Day), who is now married to John’s ex-squeeze, Gwen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Let’s just say subtly is not Jason’s greatest skill.

The Hollars, which debuted at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, marks the second film Krasinski has directed after 2009’s Brief Interviews With Hideous Men. The film also stars Anna Kendrick, Josh Groban, and Randall Park. It opens in Los Angeles and New York Aug. 26 before expanding nationally in September. Watch the trailer:
